is there anyone here that has not had carb problems with pluging up....seems like to many carb problems...is there a reason like aftermarket air filter kits or not knowing when to leave well enough alone

Could be because they aren't ridden enough or fuel filters aren't changed enough. Another reason is fuel isn't as good as it used to be. I just had mine apart and the bowls were spotless 5 years after my rebuild. I put a shot of Seafoam in once a month or so...that's it.

I had a real weird problem last year with mine. Popping and banging on decel...:confused2:

Put seafoam in it and GONE! :thumbs up:

I never had it again this year but I do like Maleko and run Seafoam in it every so often now! :stickyman:

I agree, the key is keeping the system clean, tank/fuel filter/air filters, etc... I run a cleaner through once a month and have experienced very little problems over the years.

always had carb bikes....,,last bike 17 years never had problem with any carb..no gas filter to speak off just the screen in the petcock..and a filter that was pretty much out in the wind..and never used additives in gas for carbs...hopeing it stays like that...do auto parts stores carry seafoam

Might have something to do with multi-carb setup. Also, crankcase breather put dirty air through the carbs.

I get Seafoam at O'Reilly's or Advance Auto.

can you just run the crank breather hose to the ground...thats what we did with v twins,,

You could try that although I'm not sure if it would make a mess or not.

never had air box open yet so have no idea if theres any oil on fitter or box.....id think running to ground would be a lot cleaner...i see from outside of airbox two tubes on each side running into box....my guess is max motor breaths through the heads ?.....

Those are probably the carb vents you are looking at... They mount to the side of the box.

The four tubes attached to outside of the air box are the float bowl vents. The engine breathes in the middle of the "V". The hose connects to bottom of air box and there's a small catch chamber in there. The crankcase gases breathe from there and go into the air box velocity stacks and on through the carbs.

so its a single tube..thats even better...id run that sucker right to the ground...thanks for that info.....catch chanber your talking about ,,does that need to be checked and dumbed from time to time...rather have ant oil that makes it to the airbox just dump to the ground

I've checked mine twice and it's just a bit of film in there. It's easy to access. Just remove air box lid, remove air filter and then remove 2-3 screws that fasten the chamber lid. Watch for the nipples that press into the velocity stacks.

then i would think that would answer the question of there being a mess...seems like theres hardly anything in your catch over the two times you checked it,,harleys use to breath out the botton to the ground untill the epa stuff started....now its breaths from the heads to carb backing plate........most just add a crossover a single hose to the ground......might be a good idea if you think it can add carb problems from time to time,,,or just getting some extra clean air in the intake......thanks for the info mark

I guess my concern is that with stock the oil might percolate up (big word for today) and then drain back down at lower rpms or when the bike is off. It should be easy enough to try, let us know how well it works.

No problem, glad to help.
