When i got my bike like everyone else my transmission was loud and it clunked in most gears but the bike went well , on a trip i lost 4th and 5th gear and as i suspected was the gear segment selector . What i didnt know that this was 1 of the faults in pre 99 maxs . Now that my knew selector is in there (post 99) no more clunking .

So was the old selector making it clunk or did i just get lucky :ummm:

My '88 shifts just fine.

May be your clunking was a symptom of the worn part :ummm:

SO the selector from the later model fitted straight in?

What's mechanically different about the two types of selector assembly?

I think now it probably was . the new part fitted straight in.

The old 1 is on the left , when those claws wear and brake the pins will fall out , the new 1 is solid

is it possible to have a small weld put to each pin (or just fuse them in place)to keep it from ever coming out or do you ever need to remove for anything

Hello... first post here.. and this sounds like what I was looking for.. I have a 99 max.. and it only has a few miles (8300 or so). The transmission is pretty clunky (Didn't use to be). I'm kind of hard on it.. but this sounds like my issue. N to 1st is rough, 1-2 can be nerve wracking. And as you go up the gear range it gets better.. I tried bleeding the clutch, thinking that might help, and it does (for about 3 minutes). But does this sound like a gear selector issue?

99 is the first year for the newer segment so it should not be your issue.

Well.. thats upsetting... can it be clutch wear? The bike has less than 9K on it (But its been a trying 9K)... It sort of varies with my speed... it seems the quicker I go, the smoother it shifts

Sure you havent bent the shifter as that would make it harder to shift . :confused2:

The shifter lever on max isn't actually attatched to the shifter, it is connected via a linkage. The motorcycle did (Mysteriously) fall over in the garage onto the shifter side when it was in my father's garage and I thought that might be the case. but upon closer inspection the shift shaft itself that goes into the transmission is pretty isolated.. I suppose I'll take it to a shop and have them hash it out :confused2: I want to try making a pass with the bike, but I don't want to until the transmission clunking is sorted out

Okay.. maybe I'm beating a dead horse here, but Ironically I really want it to be a gear selector issue (The other possibilities are horrifying) When Yamaha went with the new style gear selector for 99.. does anyone know if it was from the start of the model year or something they changed mid year? my bike's date of manufacture is 11/98

Not sure, it could be clutch issues depending on how it was ridden. It's not all that hard to check the segment and you can look the clutch over while you are at it.

No, the real problem is there isn't enough space for a 6th gear without making the other gears narrower and thus weaker.
