got my Vmax last summer, its a 95 with 22,000mi previous owner knows his stuff and did some work on the bike--modified airbox and K&N filter,UFO full exhaust with carbon fiber cans, rejetted the carbs,Vboost switch, large rear tire, custom taillight

so I only put maybe 500mi on it 100 or more were put on it just last saturday, lots of fun and has lots of power but I'm wanting more--more power and more speed

I love the way the Honda CBR's look

I'm 42 and up until last summer I didn't own a street bike for almost 15 yrs--money issues kids bla bla bla

back when I 16 my 1st streetbike was a slightly modded GPZ 550 which was a lot of fun for a skinny 150lb kid then traded that in for a yamaha seca 650 turbo that was fun too but had it for maybe 1 yr then got into dirt riding so for many yrs I had 2 bikes a CR250 and for ripping around town I had a yamaha XT600 1996 I had to sell them both

anyway I have no problem handling the Vmax but I just feel the need for speed and want more

so do I keep the Vmax AND buy a sport bike or do I try and trade in the Vmax ??????

keep in mind I'm sitting at work and bored out of my mind:bang head:

I did the same thing in 2010, I wanted something faster with more power so I bought a Ninja ZX10R. I kept the 85 Vmax also, and after a couple thousand miles of riding the ZX10R I came to realize that 3 things were going to happen if I continue to ride this rocket.
1) I was going to die on this thing, scary fast bike.
2) I would loose my driving privileges due to speeding tickets.
3) I would need back surgery because the riding position was killing my back and neck.
At 45 years old I think I missed my sport bike days by a decade, I sold the Ninja and keep the Vmax. Soon after I bought a nicer Vmax, a low mile 05 and sold the 85 Vmax and I'm happy again:rofl_200: I was riding with a guy at the time that had a 08 Honda CBR1000 and it was a vary nice bike, clean lines and scary fast as well, good luck...

I agree with chuck...
Hate to sound like your mother but you have kids now and your in your 40's, do you really need to go faster than a vmax will take you? the max has plenty of power, good riding position, and its a unique bike that turns heads everywhere you go. just my :twocents:

There comes a point, I think, where the fun of being able to wring out a bike exceeds the fun of having a faster bike. The liter sleds, well, nothing really goes like they do, just absolute insanity. But, to really put that down and pull it hard through a couple of gears requires more space, skill, and legal leway than almost any of us are blessed with.

I just had this conversation with my friend regarding his Corvette. Current it's a mid 11's capable car, has most of the bolt-on's worth having, the next step would be an expensive one to a good heads/cam build, or more likely boost. But what, really, is the point? So you can have even more traction problems on the street? So you can get deep into "get my car impounded speeds" quicker once you do find some bite? To have a less reliable, less friendly driving machine that you can't enjoy pushing and leaning on anywhere near as much as you do now?

I can see both sides though, I'm a horsepower junkie. When I got my Max, I thought it was pretty fast at first, that lasted maybe a week or two. Now it's adequate, I've already told my wife it's too slow, and nothing short of a big bore build is going to start to fix that at all. But, it offers much more than just speed and knee dragging, it's ride all day comfy (well, once the stock seat is upgraded), quick as just about anything you'll find on the streets through 60mph, geared short so you can kick through a few before you're too deep into "get me in trouble" speeds, and has an exhaust note and looks that turns more heads and gets more appreciation than just about anything else on 2 wheels.

If you need the liter bike and can afford it, get it. But it sounds like you've got a real nice max there, I would give yourself a year with both before you decide which you really like best.

Pro:
buy and keep them both. I think you will find that when you want to rip up the corners, the CBR will be the choice. Most other times the max will be your ride of choice. I keep my old ZX11 for sporty backroad touring with soft luggage, and when I just want to tear up the corners some myself.

Con:
Start teaching your oldest child to drive now, so they can drive you to work when you eventually loose your license. Also make sure the family has plenty of life insurance just in case you meet mother nature(live animal) at 100+ in the twisty's.

Good luck with your decision.
Regards,
R

Yea, we can assist the power somewhat but the sportbikes can always have the same thing done and be faster again! Power to weight ratios they have are virtually impossible to overcome.

I've still got my 83 Seca Turbo (was my first bike). We are even doing some serious mods to it this year and that's what i'll be riding if I can get it done.

i've always found the 'acceleration' more fun that the actual high speeds. not a lot of bikes pull like the vmax. i think you'd regret selling it.

this is the time of year where though, you coud pick up a litre bike, see if you like it, and turn it around for probably similar what you paid for it minus taxes and fees.

Legal issues-that's what usually ends "I wanna have more power!" aspirations. Probably not a good road to go down, you should try borrowing a friend's bike (sportbike) for awhile, and see if you really want/need 'more power.' Then you find-out quickly that for normal street riding for most of us, a VMax gives us a sane riding position, great street power/availability, great exhaust sound, and all for a moderate price. The first speeding ticket you get on your sportbike is reason to sell it, because those things come in two's or three's and there goes your license or cost of insurance. Do you want to face that? The ZX10-R new model is capable of 130+ mph in second gear and 9 second 1/4 mi. If you try that on the street, you might as well tear up your license.

I've had the same sportbike for many years and when I have switched-off from riding the VMax to ride my 1000cc FZR, I am reminded about the difference in handling, the power characteristics, and the relative comfort of the VMax compared to the riding position of the FZR.

Try switching with your friend for a week and see if you really need the power. You might ask your insurance agent 'how much will my rates increase for a careless driving charge if I get a ticket for 100+ mph?' That might dissuade you.

Don't be too afraid of the supercharged bikes (most of them anyway). They don't put out the power you'd think. Last one I raced was .2 tenth's slower then me at the track (4mph faster). This was mostly rider difference. The bike i was riding was not mine and in fact had only been ridden by me the night before.

Seca Turbo was my second bike, what a dog till the turbo kicked in, then hold on for your life!

My last bike was a Hayabusa, and though it is way faster than the Gen I's it is and im sure the CBR 1ks are cop magnets, and a speeding ticket is always just a quick twist away...

You could also just mod the heck out of your Vmax and have the best of all worlds:biglaugh: I have mated my Max with an R1, ZX6R, and a ZX12R to come up with a Yamasaki Vmax that meets my needs, looks cool as hell (IMHO), has gobs of power, light for a Vmax, and handles on rails. Of course I could have purchased a stock Vmax, a Gen2 Vmax, and a used Hayabusa for what I have in my bike so............. Appease the Mod Monkey!!!!!!

If I get a faster bike, I can kiss my drivers license good bye... Atleast I can keep the front wheels of my VMax's down under extreme acceleration...That would be my down fall with a faster sportbike. $1066, $1066, $5000 + loss of the bike + loss of driving privileges for 10 years... I'll be dead by the time I could drive again...

U want speed and power then go for BMW 1000RR and not the CBR.
After they saying that, I still think I won't swap my vmax for a sport bike :p

Understanding your bored at work, I don't have any friends that will let me wring out there sportbike for a week, even a day! There are plenty of inexpensive litre bikes out there to buy and scratch your itch. Buy it and try it. Ride it exclusively and don't trade back and forth with your Max. You may or may not find out that wanna be racer boy is tolerable. Does the old lady ride with you? Scratch that activity off your list cause it just don't cut it on a sportbike. Do you carry anything ever? Vmax can be loaded down, sportbike carries a six pack in the tank bag. I heard all the speeding arguments. You can get popped just as easy on your bright red Vmax with the loud exhaust! Good luck convincing momma you need two bikes.
Most here are cosmetically modding their Maxes. Getting into motor upgrades get expensive fast, your down a while and you may not end up with what you want and rarely will you end up with sportbike like performance.
In the end it's your dilemma to figure out. Good luck and you know we all want you to keep your Max!!!!

Maybe you're mixing up the desire for horsepower with the ride characteristics of the Max compared to a CBR ( or any other sportbike ) . My other 2 bikes ( especially the RC51 ) fill the twisties and sore wrist requirements all too well , AND go faster than I'll ever get to see . The Max is what it is and I bought it for ' smelling the roses ' and 2 up with the wife...:punk:

Just give your needs and wants some thought and enjoy the end results...Ya guttah please yerself...:worthy:

I have one friend with a GSXR 1000 & one with a 750 that will let me tear up the roads any time I want but after about 20 miles I am ready to get off of them & get back on my Max. I would not mind having one but would never get rid of my Max. Meanwhile I will just rag on my friends.LOL

If you can afford it, have both...you may regret getting rid of the Max.
If it's paid for, you can get a good liter bike for a decent price to fill your need for speed.

I had my max for 4 years, and at a gathering hole, a couple guys I now ride with every week-end came over to take a look at her...the only Max in a herd of harleys and inlines...they were ridding a RC51 and a 954.
They said we should hook up sometime and I declined...useing the liters and cruisers aren't compatable......lo and behold, they both had cruisers also....the 954 had a 03 Max...and the RC had a 06 Warrior.
We've been friends the last 2 1/2 years.
They also go up to the Dragon every year for the last 6 years, and invited me up....what did I do bought another bike...a 02 FZ1 just for the twisties.
I went last year...loved it on the FZ....now have it totally set up for the trip this year...gearing, suspension, yada yada.
Both different animals but I always miss the Max.
Moral of my story....we ride the SPORT cruzers every week-end....probably take the inlines out once a month just to get the kinks out...and when we ride them we wish we rode the cruzers.
Mind you, we're in florida were the roads are straight as an arrow
and top speed is everything.

My 15 cents
