Over the weekend I swapped out the carbs on my Cal. bike with a set of 49-state bodies. I had completely disassembled them and swapped in all of my gaskets and jet blacks, needle jets, diaphragms. etc, and retained all of the 49-state jetting. The carbs I got were in great shape but I thoroughly cleaned them prior to assembly. I set the floats one at a time prior to assembling the rack to 16mm. Upon starting I had the obvious out-of-sync issue which I cured with the mercury stick. I was getting some pretty good popping through the intake on a couple of cyls. I backed out the mixture screws to 4-turns and it idles steady as hell. I could never get my bike to idle steady before..this is encouraging! The problem is, however, this is even MORE cold blooded than my Cali bike!!:bang head: I have to keep a little "choke" on it for several miles before the low-speed, off-idle transition becomes more tolerable once it warms up. I really have to juice it to pull away from a stop when cold which I never had to to before. I was hoping to find some definite improvement over my sick bike (I had some un-resolvable carb issues) but this seems counter-intuitive at this point.
Aside from having the 49-state jetting intact on a stock engine with stock (drilled end caps) exhaust, is there ANY other differences between a 49-state and Cali engines? I know the 49-state has #125 throttle valves and the Cal. bikes have #130..what is the diff?? Is there REALLY any differences between the camshaft profiles between the two versions??
All help is greatly appreciated!
Thanx,
Bud
