Paint Job

More of a two part question.

I am having an internal debate. Kind of far out bit one thing I plan is to paint my bike. Black with a white racing strip, or stripes... I haven't decided exactly what the pattern yet. The big question is flat black and white vs the polished look.

The second part and more immediate is that my engine looks like ****. Part of it is flat black and part polished looked. Along with that there are chips and scratches and just general wear and tare on it and Its not the best looking something I hope I can fix with out having to have the whole engine taken out of the bike.

As far as paint, I go by the philosophy of "Garbage in, Garbage out".

You can leave the engine in the frame and paint it. you would get a better product if you pulled it. BUT, :biglaugh: I've seen pretty decent garage paint jobs on the engine, where the owner just took his time and masked everything he didn't want painted. It actually turned out really well.

I've put designs on paper, then as far as the gloss or matte finishes, What I've done in the past is got a hood, door, or any other piece of metal and practiced on it.

True enough. I am defiantly not looking to really cut corners, I know where that leads.

At first I just wanted to do some touch up work so there is no chipped paint or anything but the fact there is two tones kind of kills that.

Best paint on the engine will have it removed from the frame. It could be bead blasted in the frame and then painted but the job will not look nearly as good. Check out the pics on our facebook pages to see before - during - after shots of our painted engines.

Dunno if this will help your decision or not but my bike is kinda a flat black with silver stripes and I think it looks sweet! Here are a couple of phone pics:

Thanks. Yeah I am defiantly liking the flat black look. Granted I am aiming for white racing stripes.

I am also glad to see that your cans are black too. That was something I was wondering about considering yours is the first bike I have seen that has them black.

Matt / flat black all the way! I am planning on "wrapping" the header pipes in black exhaust wrap. I also have twin dominator headlights to fit which I have sprayed matt black too.
