So, I painted my Max's engine yesterday with Duplicolor ceramic engine enamel, looks great. I'll post pics later, but now I have a problem :confused2:

I took her out for a spin today, and everything seemed dandy until suddenly at a stoplight she just died while idling. Luckily, she started right back up again and I was able to ride home.

I'm pretty damned engine illiterate, and whenever I have a problem the first thing I do is change the oil, lol. However, the same thing happened after I started her up again while she was warming up. Again, started right back up.

I removed her instrument cluster so I don't know what she's idling at (yeah, I'm an *****), however, my extremely amateur diagnosis is that I probably clogged an important intake with paint?? I taped off the carbs, only painted the engine itself. Is there anything I could've clogged? :ummm: I did spray paint the area underneath the carbs where the V-shape meets . . .

Ummm always check the stupid things first.

1 You have fuel ?

2 Check fuel filter, usually in cases for me, checking the fuel filter means replacing it since they are cheap.

3 Wiring might have been disturbed.....

I am sure others will chime in with things to look and watch for as well.

For me its late and my brain aint working as good as it should .

Good luck
Todd

Sounds like just a quincidense. ( can't spell) but maybe look for your grounding points? Did u spray any? If they were tight shouldn't effect anything but its a stay.. if u ever have a running problem idle, sputtering, so on. The first thing to do is drain the carbs one by one into a clear cup so u can see what's coming out.. if ur getting dirt turn key on let pump fill carbs then drain again till no more dirt.. then try the pea shooter/shotgun technique. If dirt maybe rust doesn't stop coming out drain gas and check gas tank for rust.. also check your sparkplugs see if there really black might be fouled out...

Did you go anywhere near (undoing, disturbing) the sidestand switch whilst painting? They have a reputation for a ****** contact.

Coincidence? Yeah, probably.

Carb issue? Probably not.

If it dies at idle only after warm up, check that it's dying only after your fan kicks in. If so, you may have a charging issue. Your ECM (black box) likes good voltage, and when the fan kicks in, it takes a lot of current from the system. If the charging system is going south, it won't make enough voltage to run both the fan and the ECM at the same time.

Thanks for the advice guys,

Yeah I have fuel :rofl_200: I'll check the fuel filter, though.

I've been meaning to shotgun my carbs, should get around to that. Stupid lazy *******, I am.

I covered the sidestand switch pretty well, I don't think I disturbed it. I have noticed it's a finicky *******.

It died even while warming up, before the fan :bang head:

I'm actually not even sure where the spark plugs are, I haven't changed em yet . . .

And here are what you guys all wanted: PICS!! :punk:

Yeah, I missed peeling off some painter's tape, was too excited hah :biglaugh:

+1, souds electrical to me if it's running well otherwise. It should charge at idle
with everything on,high beam, directional, fan, and brake light included. A battery in good condition is a must have.

+1 pm'd ya.I think the above is very possible and a good place to start.

Wow, I've heard of a Ferrari Testa Rossa (red head) but yours is block, crankcase, transmission and etc!

Here is a comparable sound to the Kerker Vmax sound. How d'ya like those Weber velocity stacks? Count'em. A bit into the video, about 1:19, you hear that the brakes need adjusting, or maybe a few good sessions of hard stops to clean the rust off the surfaces. I doubt he is running that anywhere near halfway up the rev range, especially after being mothballed for 2 years. The Ferrari V-12 sound is justifiably-famous, like the Kerker/VMax sound is!
