Somewhere on the forums I read about a guy who did a preliminary cleaning of his carbs by soaking them in pure Pine Sol. It evidently worked.

I'm in the process of rebuilding the brake calipers on my 1986 and I think they've never been touched before because the seals came out in small pieces. I tried a lacquer thinner soak for a day but this did nothing. It appeared that I was going to have to buy a dremel tool and use a wire brush but I didn't want to chance ruining the surfaces inside the calipers.

I soaked everything in Pure Pine Sol (No Water Added) for a week and I just took them out. a quick rinse with water and I was able to wipe what was left out of the seal grooves with q-tips. everything else was spotless.

Amazing. Baked on brake lining was removed as well even though the lacquer thinner did not touch it.
