Im getting an engine rattle/grind when accelerating through approx the 3200-3600 rpm range Any ideas? Seems to get worse when warmed up. The noise occurs in at least the first 3 gears. 2001 vmax, stock. 20k Miles. Sometimes sounds like gravel in the exhaust pipe.... Just trying to be descript. Thanks.

I would first check for anything loose that's vibrating. It's really hard to tell without hearing it.

Does it do it when slowly revving the motor in neutral?

No, the noise does NOT occur when revving in neutral.... only when the gears are under a load.

OK.... So I went out and banged around on the motor area... and eventually discovered that when I hit the side of the radiator with the heel of my hand (where the reflectors are) I get a loud clanking buzzing vibration noise. I cannot tell if it is coming from the fan housing or where... but perhaps this is a possible suspect?

Does it go away when you push the faux tank down a bit? That's always chattery.

Fan blade loose or bent? Something caught in fan area hitting fan? :confused2:

It's possible for the fan housing to get a little deformed with heat/time, and then the fan blades will hit it and make a lot of noise. But that would happen all the time, not just under load :ummm:

By the sound of it, you may have a gearbox, clutch or drive line issue. It's common for the driveshaft nut in the differential housing to get loose, but then it's noisy on descelleration only, so prolly not your problem.

Put it on the center stand with engine off and hit the front tire head on with a rubber hammer hard enough to make bike vibrate, if you intensify your pounding you should be able to find what is resonating.

Thanks for the insight.
Faux tank is tight.
Rubber mallet to front tire produces no noise

I suspect the fan bearing is wobbling. Can one of you please go out and thump on the side of your radiators..... And tell me whether it sounds like 12 plastic marbles rattling in a glass jar.

Thanks kindly !!!!!
