Ok, got the flywheel off, I replaced the 3 bolts, now when I reinstall it all I'm noticing some play in the large gear behind the starter clutch. Almost seems to need a washer or something to take up the room so it can't move because now after its all back together it's STILL making a horrendous noise when I hit the start button. WTF can I be doing wrong?

I'm also noticing some grooves on the inside of the flywheel where the stator rides. Is this a problem or pretty common? Thanks. Also anyone have a new gasket for the stator cover or do I have to order a new one from the stealer and wait a week?

Are you sure there aren't any cracks in the starter clutch. They can be hard to see and expand when under load. Also, the ring gear itself is perfectly smooth when new and a few deformations won't hurt much but if it's really flat spotted then you may want to replace it.

There is a normal amount of play for the ring gear to move in/out when it's together too. There is one washer that goes into the flywheel before the starter clutch is put in.

We've got all that stuff here. It's also normal to see wear marks where the starter clutch pins were digging into the flywheel. You can always smooth them up a little (just knock off the high spots).

Sean, is the same starter clutch as a 85 Venture Royale? I found one on eBay for around $30 and do you sell the gasket for that side case? My starter clutch looks fine, not even a hairline crack anywhere! What could this problem be?? It's driving me frikkin nuts!! I've done everything to the tee.I've watched your videos, ( great help) on pulling the flywheel and it worked like a charm but now putting it back together it still is making a terrible sound almost worse than before. Not the bag of rocks sound anymore but a new screeching type of sound coming from the starter clutch flywheel area. Why me? Everyone else seems to not have this problem. WTF am I doing wrong?

Does the noise stop as soon as the engine starts/release the start button?

What about if you touch the starter while the bike is idling in neutral? It won't hurt anything since the flywheel and thus the clutch ring is spinning faster than the ring gear. Should just hear the whirr of the motor and maybe some gear noise. Do you get the screech like if you were actually cranking the engine to start?

I have the crankcase off, so listening while running isn't an option. I pulled the starter so I'm putting that all back together now (radiator and hoses) just doesn't make sense I'm putting it all back together same as it came apart and no cracks or anything wrong with anything. WTF could be causing this? I'm gonna record the sound and see if that helps anyone determine what's up.

Anyone know if I can post a video from an iPhone so yins can see what this sounds like?

not as straight forward as pics. posting vids usually involving posting it to a server like Youtube and then posting the youtube link in a forum post. if you want, i helped out another lad, who emailed me his vid and i uploaded it to youtube and posted the vid for him.

just did a 92.I replaced the clutch, ring gear and the gear that runs the ring gear.I did not see a washer when I took it apart.Iam thinking it stuck to the flywheel. When you hit the button,it cranks over but it sounds like the little gear is not meshing completely and skipping.Iam at a loss at what's next to check or repair

Thanks Rick, Seans sending me the middle gear gasket so at least that much of it will be good to go. I owe you one Rick. If I can ever help you with anything just let me know. I actually had the flywheel off again last night and DID find that mystery washer! It was there the whole time! I just forgot that it is between the starter clutch and the flywheel. And after further inspection, there are NO cracks at all in the starter clutch, flywheel or anywhere else burin still gonna try the ones I have on the way. I'll keep yins updated as this saga continues...

Finally got the chance to work on the starter clutch and put in the new parts and gaskets (thanks again Rick and Sean) and it fired RIGHT up!!! Better than it ever had. Just goes to show just because parts look ok, it doesn't mean they are. But on a sour note, I was waiting for my buddy to register for the World of Wheels show but when I tried to sign up they said it was too late. So, oh well, guess I gotta try again next year. That Sucks!!!
