And I wonder what else could be not kosher, like it maybe having a Venture motor? I will check the Vin numbers, since I own two 1200 ventures an 83, 85 and an 89 1300 I do know what a venture motor looks like. Knowing it's not original I can bargain with seller some I think.

Well I just got back, bought bike for $1800, runs like an ape with a bad wife after it, was a bit chilly, got into the boost twice, freaking awesome bike, has a Metzler 170 on the rear, super traps sound really cool. Now I need to get back into the forums for all the tricks on the bike, last Vin digits are 5 xxx so it's not a low Vin bike.

The rear fender was indeed chopped off and the light remounted, plate is attached in a crude fashion, so I have a choice, leave it be or steal the rear fender from the other 85 and repaint everything, it's the dark amethyst blue color but the tank has chips in the paint. It kinda looks cool with the bobbed back end though and the Metzler 170 right out in the open.

Looks to be the same color as my 85 that had been up against a wall in a back yard here in the Colorado elements since 94, love at first sight..

It's a dark blue almost purple color, amethyst? Another poster gave me info it's a color that a certain year Porsche uses. I will head to NAPA and ask my paint guru for some color patches to match.
Gonna do a high end repaint with new urethane clear coat. Needs a new battery, will hit the battery threads for who is using what and what modded the best.

A good AGM battery seems to be the 'cheap-shot' alternative. I have a Li-ion battery & like it but they are $$. Going to an aftermarket exhaust where you lose the centerstand, and a Li-ion battery can save you maybe 5% of the weight of your bike. I weighed up all that stuff in another post & got a specific #. I also use COP's & saved the coils' weight.

It has an Odyssey pc680 battery in it, I strongly suspect it's due for a starter upgrade as its hard to start hot, had the same issue with my cx650 bike, basically the same starter ground issue internally . Had to put charger on it yesterday to get it going, system is charging properly so I may have an older battery and a dirty starter inside. Funny thing is I am not hearing the V boost cycling, fuel pump clicked a bit but no other sound, will have to look into it later, bike needs to come into the house for the winter anyway today, it's getting near 20 f at night now and getting colder soon.
I lack a proper heated garage, usually bikes have been at work or in some outside storage sheds, right now I have a 93 Goldwing in my old hot tub room awaiting restoration and a paint job, vmax will be in my man cave room, had my 95 Virago 750 there last winter.

Will have plenty of time to go through it all, I think somebody also put some progressive front springs in it, seller gave me a Corbin seat as well and some extra parts. It will get the full treatment, new bearings, all new fluids, brake pads, upgraded lights, a new rear fender and a new paint job. The windshield is kinda old so I will upgrade that as well, and I want some storage space, at least some saddlebags of some sort or hard bags. Seller also gave me a pair of yamaha fabric saddlebags but I want something unique in either leather or carbon fiber.
If I am riding it it has to have some place for stuff like water, tools, or gloves and stuff. Don't need it to be a touring bike, I have three Ventures and quite a few Goldwings for that. I just love the power and sound, people look and stare at this bike!

Interesting development on the running 85 I just bought, seems it may not be an 85 motor, might be a 96 or so as it has a spin on oil filter. Chassis vin and title match and says bike is an 85, has the V boost but I don't think it's working, does not cycle when I turn key on, only had the bike a few days ago and I just got through bringing it into my man cave for the winter and then this winter a thorough going through.
Does not look like any adapter plate from a canister type lower case so either it's had a later lower case installed or its a newer year engine, does not look like a Venture motor.

I need to find the Vin numbers decipher page.

Looks like the second 85 has a 98 motor in it, definitely a real spin on filter, no adapter and it has from what I can see the gold label analog ecu in it, the round plug to the vboost module was undone, plugged it in and vboost cycles properly now.
The engine runs absolutely great when I brought it home and I am laughing at myself for even thinking the V boost was working, it was not, gonna have to buy some Kevlar underwear when it comes out next spring to ride WITH the vboost working. Sadly it's snowing now here in Alaska and no more riding.

So it's a green light for mods, it's been bobbed decently but I will install an led tailight first chance, and a new windshield, possibly one of those Chinese digital speedo units as well.

The ignitech ecu with vboost is being considered. My tentative goal is to enter this bike in next spring Anchorage custom bike show, so far somebody did something to this bike, bigger tire, stainless lines, newer engine. And I have done hours or back forum reading of user mods getting a feel and a handle for this vmax, it's actually got me more amped up than restoring a Goldwing.

Here we have the typical Alaskan answer to winter storing our bikes, we bring them inside our homes, this one the 85 with the 98 motor sits right behind my recliner in the "man cave"
Looks like it's been upgraded with a mosfet regulator, stainless lines up front, very clean motor, no corrosion at all, has been bobbed in the rear as its obvious and I am trying to figure if I should leave it but put a better led tailight back there or take the rear fender off the other 85 that this thread was originally about and repaint all in amethyst, it's going to be repainted anyway.
