Yamaha, or maybe better pointed at Valentino and Jorge, got it wrong this morning when they should have pitted to come off the rain tires at this round of Moto GP in San Marino, Italy. The race at Misano Circuit named after fallen rider Marco Simoncelli, stated out dry but soon the rain stated to fall and the events that followed must have left his large throng on followers wondering at Valentino's race tactic for this track which is basically his home track.
It all started to unravel for Yamaha when Jorge who came in one lap too late to come off his disintegrating wets, as it turns out, then while trying to cover the gap back to Marquez he crashed out on 1st lap back on slicks on a ever drying track. Marquez had made the smart decision a lap earlier than the Yamaha's to change to slicks and was closing in on the remaining factory Yamaha. Valentino, in a rare misstep in this years championship run, stayed out on his wets which were rapidly shredding underneath him without the rain to keep them cool. He started losing around 9 seconds a lap to slick shod runners yet he stayed out for 2 more laps relegating him to a regrettable 5th position at the end. He maintains his championship lead but this was a mental gaff that would of been more costly had Jorge not crashed. Marquez still remains a mathematical contender and could pick up momentum if more mistakes are made in the future races for the Moto GP championship leading Yamaha camp.
