i posted a similar thread to find out who or how i could shorten my sidestand. responses were great, general concensus was to have a local welder cut below the spring catch and above the foot, then weld them back together. bought a stand on ebay for 8 bucks 14 with the shipping and had it done. they did a great job and even painted it so it looks new. problem is its still not short enough to lean the bike to the left as far as i would like. ive got too much money into this thing to chance it falling over. is there an adjustable option available that anyone is familiar with? i saw one on a gsxr, but they dont have one that mounts to the v max. im running a complete r1 front end with the cycle one off tripples and a wider 17" rear wheel. also, i took a hard left and i seem to be scraping the bottom of the left front down pipe. this only happens when i lean the bike hard left and use a little front brake. if i stiffen the springs in the forks will this help the problem? not sure whats in there right now, but i imagine they are the stock R1 inners. any and all help appreciated. thanks again.

regards jeff

I had the same problem Jeff.

I did mine myself so it was easier to remove and remodify. When you put the stand down it hits the stop to keep it from going further forward. Remove some if this material and the stand will go forward more which will also make it go up causing it to act like it's shorter.

Now my only problem is I keep grinding (in the corners) the piece coming out of it so now I need to cut it off and reposition it too...:confused2: :bang head:

i was thinking about cutting another piece out above the catch the same length as the small metal bracket that the spring connects to on the bike. reweld from the catch down and reconnect the spring to the post where the bracket was mounted. leaving the bracket out and removing only the same length as the bracket should still allow the stock spring to be used. reckon it'll be about another inch. got any suggestions on the exhaust scraping? i remember reading a thread about the wider rear wheel that they sell on ebay. i had already purchased one prior to reading and i think part of the problem is the offset of the wheel. in a left hand turn i'm actually running on a lower edge of the wheel than center. on the right side, the tire tracks the road off-center but more towards the middle. i shoulda just got the rc wheels! do you know what the best front fork spring relacement would be so when i get on the brakes the bike doesnt travel as far as fast as it does now in the front end? thanks again

Race tech 1.0 springs and 20wt oil.

NO! Mine barely works and I had to do some re-engineering of the spring to make it work... reckon it'll be about another inch. got any suggestions on the exhaust scraping? Your exhaust hits? Haven't had mine over that far yet. Is it stock exhaust? i remember reading a thread about the wider rear wheel that they sell on ebay. i had already purchased one prior to reading and i think part of the problem is the offset of the wheel. in a left hand turn i'm actually running on a lower edge of the wheel than center. on the right side, the tire tracks the road off-center but more towards the middle. i shoulda just got the rc wheels! do you know what the best front fork spring relacement would be so when i get on the brakes the bike doesnt travel as far as fast as it does now in the front end? thanks again Race-Tech straight rate springs good Silkolene fork oil and emulators do the trick! Mine is amazing!

See red above!

I have modified several side stands in a completely different way. I have a 30" inseam and often lower my bikes so this is a normal problem for me.

I place the bike on the side stand and heat it with a oxy-acet. torch while pulling on the handlebar. You can control the heat by moving the torch closer and farther depending on the rate of bend. You don't want to get it too hot and it bends too easily and falls over on you. As it heats enough it slowly starts to bend. When it gets where I want it, I remove the heat and let it cool. I then have it powdercoated. I usually buy a extra side stand off eBay to modify so I can get it back to stock.

My 1200 Bandit had been this way 3 years with no problems except the lowering does make scraping in the corners easier. I also modified the centerstand which was MUCH more difficult and expensive.
