Take a look at this article:
http://www.cyclenutz.com/repairtips/bat_coil_ign.htm
After reading it, does anyone know how our systems are setup? I never did the test myself, but I'll do it when I get my new TCI (my bike is currently down do to frying the Dyna 3000). I've never seen the issue of spark plug polarity discussed before and I'm wondering if the Vmax has positive or negative polarity. Especially with the COP mod.

Not getting to technical I would guess a Positive Charge since you have to ground the spark plug in order to check for spark:confused2:

The polarity has to do with which end of the plug is positively charged. Negative polarity means the spark plugs center electrode is negatively charged and its ground electrode is positively charged. Positive polarity is the opposite.

Most all COP ignition systems are Negative Polarity.
Most wasted spark ignition systems are DUAL polarity. That is those wasted spark systems that use "dual" coils( single coil units with dual plug wire leads feeding two cyl). One is always negative and the other is always positive.
Not sure on the V-max though, with it being a wasted spark ignition BUT using 4 individual coils. More than likely, they are all negative.

Hey Bird,
I finally got my TCI unit from Bike Bandit. I think I told you how they shipped one before that got damaged during shipping. Well I got the new one and it looks great. The bike starts right up and idles smooth with the COP's and the new TCI.

Now for a question................ I saw in another post that you indicated that the coil on plug sticks have the negative side on the left and the positive on the right, if you're looking at the prongs in the coil stick. Is that right and how did you know? I wired my bike that way but I want to make sure that this gives me the corect spark plug polarity. I tried the tests I read in the article I attached but my analog meter shows nothing when cranking the motor and the other test in the article is 'inconclusive.'

Also, the reason I ask is that the stock 2001 Vmax wiring uses a red wire with the white stripe for positive voltage. The Yamaha R1 coil and wiring harness that I got also uses a red wire with a white stripe. But I don't know if this is also used for it's positive voltage. If I wire it to give me the positive voltage on the right side of the coil, then I wind up with my Vmax negative wires going to the red/white wires on the R1 coil packs.

Vinnie I am not sure what you are getting at but
The red/white wire is the 12v feed to the coils. Look in the tech manual, page 7-23 and you will see the red/white is the feed for all the coils and the different color wires; orange, gray, yellow and white are the return to the ignitor.

On your wiring harness for the cop, which can only be hooked up one way to your COPs, you will have 4 wires that are the same color, you said yours was red/white as well. There should be 4 other wires that are different colors. Hook up all the red/white to the red/white and obviously the others will just sort themselves out. PM me if you have any questions. We will see if I can make it more clear than the mud mess I tried here with.
Cheers

Hey RagingMain,
Thanks for the info! I actually looked up, and downloaded an electrical schematic for the 2006 R1 and found that it is almost exactly like the the coil hookup for the Vmax (except for the COP's). I got all my wires straight and all is ok. I was just a bit confused seeing some of the wiring on past posts and was wondering if everyone was keeping the polarity correct.

Gonna sleep good tonight :punk:
