ok so my starter clutch was going bad, or so i thought....pulled it apart and the bolts were pretty loose...so i tightened them up with red locktite and put it all back together...the rollers looked ok....but its still acting up now...when you hit start it will rattle around for a few seconds and then stop and you just hear the starter whining...stop for a second and then hit start again and it repeats the process, occasionally starting

should i pull it apart again and replace the spring/pins/rollers? or should i try getting a new starter?

Get new bolts, use red locktite, peen the end of bolts, make sure the clutch housing is not cracked. If it is cracked replace the starter clutch.

If it's still rattling, starter clutch is probably bad assuming rollers/bolts are tight and okay.

Agreed. The starter clutch probably has a crack that you can't see readily. If the starter spins it's probably ok.

the housing was tight... but the rollers were hard to get in...they kept falling out, they werent "tight"...are those springs supposed to have enough tension to hold them in?

the bolts were fine, i even had a yamaha tech look at them and he said to reuse them...put in with red locktite, and peened them....its gotta be an issue with the rollers/pins/springs i would think...the clutch housing piece didnt look cracked, but i guess i coulda missed something?
