My starter off my 85 project bike wouldn't turn or spin or do anything with current applied to it, so I figured I couldn't hurt it if I tore into it. Well, here is what I found. The brush springs are rusted and one was broken. I think the starter would work if I was able to get new brushes and springs, but I doublt I can get that from Yamaha. Here is what one looks like if you ever wanted to know. It is very simple to take apart, and you really can screw the assembly up either.

Damn, where did you find this bike, in the middle of the ocean under the titanic:ummm:

To be honest I wouldnt go through the dealers. If you have a starter / alternator shop around I would take the brushes down to them, you may also need to have it turned. I personally would throw back in the ocean.

Jeff, Most auto parts stores have starter/alternator shops they work with. The starter on my 4 wheeler went south and I dropped it off at the a/p place, 3 days later it was back and working like a new one.
