Do you you mean that the starer turns but the motor doesn't or that the starter doesn't turn at all?

Two different problems, two different fixes.

The first is most likely the starter clutch - have a look here for some guidance.

The second scenario sound like the old hot start chestnut - have a look here.

heres a short video of what its doing.u cant really hear what i'm hearing as far as the teeth chattering when its engaging but it might help some i dont knowhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHpyKEICNYw

Just remove the starter and chuck it. Thats unnecessary weight. All you need to do is park at the top of a hill all the time.

how can u tell if its the starter not fully engaging which would make the starter the culprit or the starter clutch problem?

The Max uses what is known as a Sprag Clutch to turn the motor - have a read at here.

Understood?
So, you can understand that if the starter motor is turning and the motor isn't it's the one way clutch that has gone a.w.o.l.
As a pre cursor to the total failure you may also get some rattling/ graunching as the motor turns.

Bike on stand in neutral. Take jumper cable from good car battery ground to frame and touch positive to covered post on starter . Does it turn over? if not its dead if it spins then check the starter relay under seat .cross two posts with a screwdriver does it spin? if so then you have a starter button dead If starter has always spun, but no engagement then pull left stator cover and pull the flywheel. Th starter clutch mechanism has broken spring/s or rough contact surface on the sprocket Hope this helps

I can walk you through the starter clutch if needed

i removed the covers and the gears all look good and the 3 starter clutch mounting screws aren't loose at all, theyre still peened solidly in place from factory.is there a way to test the starter clutch at this stage?it should turn only one direction correct?i hate to pull the flywheel if i dont need to

The starter clutch can still be bad even with tight bolts. My video's show removal and inspection of it.

right as always sean, although i couldnt turn the bolts as in your video i removed the flywheel and when i went to remove the starter clutch i noticed i could move it by hand and the bolts were not completely tight although the peen marks were in alignment and yes it did have a crack in it right across one of the holes for the spring and pin, right at a weak point.ordering a new one, yamaha parts depot seems to be the least expensive(107.00 and about 12.00 to ship)thanks for posting those videos, really helpful..Dave

Keep in mind I have the parts on hand too (probably a bit more expensive then that place though). I think I have 2 of them on hand at the moment.
