What should the voltage read from the stator with engine running?

Idle 2000rpm 5000rpm ???

About 50 VAC at 5K rpms. Make sure you disconnect the stator from the harness before running the test.

Anything under those number indication of a problem?

I think the stator is going bad......

I just tested my stator at 5000rpm and got nothing, maybe a tiny bump on one combo of the three wires coming from the stator leads, (sat on 50vac).... the system had been giving me trbl, so I have been keeping it on the batt. tender every night and it will sit at work all day and start for the ride home and even later in the day, but last night it quit at a stop sign and I could only push start it once there, the next time I was close enough to push it home and charge it overnight to start testing the R/R, which tests good...I'm using that 4page process that I printed from this forum.

Also the resistance was bad on one wire of the tail coming from the stator, like 18 ohms of resistance

any chance one of the wires is broken at the stator coil ? ......guess I'll find out!

This is what I found, kinda melted and fried broken wires...well I put the pix in my photo album, two of the wires must have been just sitting there touching but not soldered anymore

Has anyone noticed how the connector that's on the wires coming from the stator and going to the R/R gets really really hot?

My last connector (on the stator side) was totally fried, and when I replaced my harness I replaced that connector too, then after running the bike for a bit noticed that the connector feels VERY hot to the touch.

Normal?

Yeah, that and the R/R get really hot. I removed that connector, soldered and insulated. When replacing to Venture R/R the connection looked new yet.

That connector between the stator and the R/R gets hot due to resistance due to corrosion. My '85 melted the connector, I soldered the 3 connections, and have had no more problems - after I switched to a newer design R/R unit. I believe the '96 & newer Maxes have the newer unit. I bought an Electrex online, and am very pleased with it. You want the unit with a seperate ground wire, not the old kind that grounds to the frame. Put the wires directly to tha battery, and you don't have to do the "crimp fix", either.

I have a friend with an older Gold wing, and he also melted the connector between the stator and the R/R.....

If you remove the connector and solder the wires, be aware that they can connect in any order. It's 3-phase AC coming out of the coil, and the R/R doesn't mind how the power gets to it.

Interesting. I looked at my connectors and they looked in good shape. I already have the crimp fix, a newer style R/R (it has fins) and a phat ground wire straight to the battery.

BTW, is there any product out there that is 'spray-on' and good to remove corrosion and dirt from electrical connections? Other than isopropyl alcohol, which is good for dirt but doesn't do much for corrosion..

You can use coke-cola to clean out the corrosion. Or, a mix of arm and hammer and water (won't leave it sticky like the coke does).

Should've thought about the coke - of course that's the best stuff - the fire dept even use it to clean blood stains off the roads after accidents!

Then isopropyl will take care of the sugary residue..

But I've never heard of 'arm and hammer water', what is this and where do I get it from?

arm & hammer baking soda. Does pretty much the same thing as the coke does.
