I have a 1992 that I let set up and am in the process of getting it back to running and looking good. Here is one of my many problems my wheels look like ass. I would like to know if any of you have found an easy way to get them back to looking good. Or for that matter a way to make them look good again. Other then buying a new set of wheels. Thanks.

It isn't a problem if they look like a hot chick's ass.

:biglaugh:

I've been wondering how to clean up the wheels on my Max also. They are lathed and have the small grooves in the aluminum, which makes it hard to polish.

Yep those damn groves, I would like to meet the guy that thought that was a good idea!

Get some metal polish and rub away. If it's too much of a mission you can always get a professional metal polisher to do it. Cheap enough and results should be like new.

So far, my attempts at polishing have been futile. Almost like it needs a good sanding, yet nothing works very good with the lathed surface.

We can chrome them.

Or

you can have them powdercoated locally or we can do that too.

Or

it's a good excuse for a new set of wheels.

There's been some voices of experience speaking to you in this thread.

If you want to polish them you will need to....

1) Your wheels are sealed with a type of clear coat and that needs to be stripped first.

2) You can cut the lathe lines out of it using a high speed hand drill and a sisal buff with suitable cutting compound. (forget hand rubbing with wet and dry. That's for the birds.

3) Finish in the same way with a cotton stitch buff and aluminium polishing compound.

4) Be prepared to keep polishing them forever to keep them looking good or get them sealed with clear two pack enamel.

I've done it all. It's hard work.

If you have access to a professional metal polishing service use it. OR...

Nickel plate them OR....

for max bling, Chrome them. OR....

powder coat them OR....

buy new rims.

very common problem with all the coated yamaha parts. Shipping runs around $20-$30 each so not horrible. Coating is by far the cheapest thing but also be prepared to remove the bearings. You can try to clean out all the grease from the cage bearing on the drive side rear and let them mask it off to try and keep from having to replace it. It is a pain in the ass to remove. I've got plenty of wheels on hand to use for cores but none of them are perfect if that's what you want.

Of course we can sell you a brand new set of custom wheels too! RCcomp, Carrozzeria, and others.

This is just my thought on this, if I'm wrong I'll say I'm wrong.

I have a 2000 with stock rims. The rims are clear coated with some type of heavy duty clear, maybe some type of clear epoxy?? I think most of what everyone is seeing is just the clear chipping off. Mine are doing the same thing. If you completely stripped the clear off, put some aluminum cleaner/acid on the rims to get the aluminum looking good and recleared the rims, would this be a fast "fairly easy" way to get the rims looking good again?

I was a musician for many years in a road band. We had a pretty big light show that went with us. The truss was built out of aluminum. About once a year we had to clean the truss. I don't remember what the stuff was called but it was some type of acid for cleaning aluminum. It worked really well. We did not clear coat the truss we just cleaned them. They get dull looking again and we'd clean them again.

Just brainstorming.....:hmmm:

I should add that I know this wouldn't make the rims appear polished, just at best, make them look like they did when they were new.
