Surprise to me...found this hack job and now the bike won't continue to run in gear. Clearly the switch was removed by the previous owner. The bike is killed in gear when the wires are together or separated. What am I missing here?

Nasty looking. Looks like battery acid got to it... or salted Vermont roads.
Well, the bike only has just over 1000 miles total and I don't think and its been in the salt. I'm the 2nd owner and went through the electrical after this and cleaned some nooks out. All cleaned out and wired much better.
