What is the factory swingarm made of? I'm not near my bike. Going to notch/ brace mine. Aluminium or steel? Thanks, Justin

Galvanised steel tube. The right hand side (non shaft side) is about as heavy a gauge of steel as the average car exhaust pipe.

Thank you, just starting to research this. I do exhaust for a living and have all the tools and material to do it myself, so might as well do something while it's in storage and 5 degrees here in Colorado. I'll take pics and let you know how it goes. Also, when the swingarm is extended, generally is it from the front mounting point or the rear section, near the hub?

well lets not take that "exhaust tubing" comment to literally!..

extending on the drive side is easy with overlapping structural tube (DOM),

The other side is a little harder due to the arc shape but again a serious overlap sleeve joint is required.

You should jig the whole thing as well.

Then you need an extended drive shaft made.

CLARIFICATION: The right hand side tubing for the swingarm IS no heavier gauge than your average car exhaust. (I think there are some cross sectional photo's of a chopped up swingarm somewhere on this site). It is a well recognised source of distortion (twist and flex) under load.

The swing arm needs to be accurately made. However, being light material it is easily distorted. Even incorrectly tensioning the swingarm bearings will distort a standard swingarm.

That doesn't mean you can mod the swingarm with the same margin of error you might apply to fabricating an exhaust but you can certainly apply your fabricating skills.

I guess you should clarify what you are attempting to do. Are you literally seeking to lengthen the swing arm? (In which case you will need a lengthened shaft) or are you trying to fit a wider tyre / rim combination? or are you seeking to strengthen the swingarm with bracing sections?

Let us know and we can give you specific advice for the mod.

I must confess i haven't cut one up like you must have (love to see those photos), but i do have one on my work bench right now.

It dont feel like galvanized steel exhaust tube to me but it may indeed be the same wall thickness. The cross tube supporting the bearings is not and the end with the differential flange on it looks to be some overlapped material adding strength(the flange is a formed part).

All cool...its is what it is... id use something stronger when doing a stretch..

I wasn't planning on extending it yet, just curious. My point of mentioning that I do exhaust is that I'm familiar w/ tubing, gauges, bending, etc. Besides, I do damn good work... : )

Well then... Let's see that custom exhaust on the Max...

What kind of performance cage mufflers do you prefer?

I'm a Flowmaster guy...:thumbs up: Just fell in love with the sound and the way they're built!

Justin, looking at getting a better muffler/cat-back for my Jeep Cherokee. It's a 4.7 L V8 and want to hear that engine more. :) What's a good muffler? Magnaflow?

I have a friend with a magnaflow on his 5.4 liter F-150 extended cab and it gets pretty boomie (sp?) in the cab. I have a Flowmaster setup on my 5.4L and it has more of the mustang sound to it. Not quite as good but very nice IMHO.:coolgleamA:

I took the pipe from the cats back off on my Yukon.Took an air cut off wheel and cut a big square out of the top of the muffler.Completely gutted out the muffler. Then welded the square back in.Put the heat sheild back on.You can't ever tell it was changed.Sounds bad *** when you kick it down.
Took me about an hour.

I almost went with Flowmaster but after hearing the Magnaflows went with them. They are a lot more mellow than the Flowmasters if that is your thing.

The one I'm running on my 6.0 HD2500 is the single muffler dual inlet-dual outlet. The truck has dual cats and true dual but uses one muffler.

I had it dumped straight to the ground in front of the rear axle for a while but the resonance started getting to me so I went ahead and ran it all the way out the back. didn't want to have to wear ear plugs like I do on the bike.

I'm still thinking about taking some gutted Vmax cans and using them for exhaust tips to complement the Vmax stickers on my back window.

Not familiar with the term "caged", do you mean chambered? Below is a pic of my previous exhaust, a new one is in the works, but I love the factory sound.
Mark- Aero-turbine 3030 or 2525 on the 4.7, a little aggressive, but the best muffler for that Chrysler motor.
The GM 6.0 is one of the WORST resonating engines in the p/u's. Magnaflow 12595 is the best.
Motorcycle tips on a p/u? wouldn't be the first time.

Cage = 4 wheels and a structure around you... Cars/trucks.

Cage = a device to imprison, to restrict liberty. i.e. a motor vehicle
Caged = imprisoned, trapped, captive. i.e. a motorist

I thought you guys might enjoy this:

We chopped a full 2000 Tacoma and fused a 2000 4-Runner Limited on the front.

She's TRD supercharged with Supra injectors, NOS, pulleyboys pulley, custom flashed cpu, and much more!!!

I drive her daily, with the trailmaster 6" suspension lift and she will absolutley smoke all 4 tires off. Of course I have locked the rear locker with a simple electronic switch. I run over small tress with this one ;)

Around 22 lbs. of boost on full cpu flow.

Beast!!!!

We're around 420 HP with minor boost on a 3.4 ;)

PS. My hand is getting better ;)

Thanks for the links, good info there. I'm determined to retain my center stand and factory exhaust, but unfortunately that may not happen. Looks like that new exhaust may happen sooner than later.

I recommend removing the centerstand. You can still stick it back in for maint. work. Most here do this.

I also recommend trying to find another vmaxer in your area that has aftermarket exhaust for you to hear in person.Night and day differance over stock.I had to have one after hearing my first one.I even already had supertrapps at the time. They had to go!
