OK, so here's what has been done to date; 93 Cal Vmax w/ 25,000 miles
  • Checked valve clearences and are fine.
  • Carbs were covered with oil from leaking valve covers so pulled them apart and cleaned, checked fuel level and reinstalled after replacing valve cover gaskets.
  • Went to sync and everything is irradic, especially idle speed. Have the idle set screw backed all the way off and still revving @ 4,000 r's. Checked the mixture screws and have them @ 1 full turn out. Checked linkage and everything looks good.
  • Besides not being able to run too long @ this high idle, I can't get 3 & 4 to sync with 1 & 2. Saw the note about bending the sync tabs but haven't done that yet. I took off the air box and visually checked the butterfly's and set as evenly as possible. I'm using the dial type sync gauges.
What to do next??

Got to fix the problem before a sync is considered. Hold on bending anything. Carbs seated all the way down? a/f screws-2 1/2 turns out should be a better starting point. Boots all good and on right.Recheck the carb linkage for idle position. Fuel enrichers (choke) ok?
Let us know what you find?

The bike ran well before I started all this. There was a bit of a knock at idle which sounded like a sync issue. Before I started to play with the sync screws it idled fairly well, even after I reinstalled the carbs after cleaning them. This idle problem started after I started the sync and couldn't get them sync'd. I'll double check all the connections but don't think it's that.

There was also a lot of oil covering the carbs and intakes that leaked from the valve cover gaskets. Even the intakes in the head had oil stuck to the sides. The boots weren't that tight on the Vboost and main intakes before I started. Could this be part of the problem? I got rid of most of the oil with scraping while vacuuming and ran the bike while spraying carb cleaner into each carb without the air cleaner. I took it for a ride for about 20 minutes today before the idle got out of hand and tried to burn the rest out.

Pulled the carbs back off, checked linkage, bench sync'd, reinstalled, checked all boots and clamps and started right up and purred. Gonna do a real sync now and get it lined up. Thanks for the help SDT.
