The shields - over the valves

Has anyone taken off the rubber ( I think ) shields off that are located over the valve covers ? I know they sort of hold the spark plug leads, but do they also serve as a heat shield as well ?

Anyone removed them and if so what do ya think, do you think the bike has a cleaner look to it ? Did you notice anything that would give you a reason to put them back on ?

It's okay to remove the rear cover. I would leave the front one on. It helps direct the air from the fan to the engine and also protects the electrics above it from heat.
