ive had my eye on a set of UFO exhaust with headers complete!!! right now i have Supertrapp slip ons with the open end cap and i believe 6 pucks. i was wondering if the UFO is better performing or if there are additional jet kits needed to make it work? or if i should just stick with my trapps.

also which one in your own opinon is better?

Everything UFO is **** IMHO but they will perform better than the trapps. Really any full system will be better. You won't gain a ton of power but they will be louder and offer you up a different look.

Are you buying them used or new?

Personally I would go with HMF, Marks, or Holeshots.

They're better people!:whistlin:

Scratch HMF from that list as you can't get them new anymore. If it weren't for that I would highly recommend that system. Second on my list is Mark's. UFO makes a carbon copy of the HMF or their "new" systems, but Jon Cornell's customer service is suspect at best. Besides I know for a fact that he is having the same problems HMF was having with rust issues even after the ceramic coating. A friend of mine here had to return his system for replacement to UFO, haven't heard how Jon is treating him yet.

As always this is just my opinions, and let the buyer beware.

What are you saying, that you can't get a VMax exhaust from HMF? :ummm:

HMF has made a decision to cease production of its exhaust for the VMax. There may be a few out there with vendors now that can be purchased, but I don't think that there are. Bill at Wildbros has already removed them from his website as has Python motorsports. I may have a line on a couple of sets, contact me for more info if interested and I will see what I can arrange.

Probably didn't sell enough for the Vmax to make it worth while.

I've been running UFO for a year now and love, love, love it!!!

They don't "rust", it's typical discoloration that most stainless exhausts go thru, the grade of stainless that is used to make exhaust pipes does have some carbon content, if they didn't they would be too brittle to make exhaust pipes out of. Look at any factory stainless exhaust on the sportbikes; near the engine they all discolor, keep the crap and road grime off of them and it won't happen, and if it does it polishes right out.......Always has for me........If you want clean shiny pipes with zero maintenance then you need to keep the factory exhaust because double walls keeping the heat off of the exterior pipe is the only way I've heard of to prevent it. That's why H-D's all use double wall, and don't care about the weight becuase the bike already weighs a million lbs anyway.

Did I mention I love it?

And other than the fact that you HAVE to leave a message to get a hold of Cornell, his customer service in my dealings with him had been fine.
He's always called me back the same day if I've left a message early that day.

I realize other have had issues.......:whistlin:

If you have no issues with his products you're fine. If you do...

WATCH THE **** OUT!

Rusty,

I humbly beg to differ about the rust. UFO only uses a stainless mid pipe, the headers are mild steel. My friends exhaust rusted, no two words about it. Yes there might be some normal discoloration due to minute amounts of carbon if this were stainless, but his system was orange with rust that would not polish out. Trust me if this wasn't a problem Jon wouldn't be replacing the system as we speak. Wish I had pics to post. Now having said that, my HMF system did the EXACT same thing and lo and behold both Jon and HMF were using the same ceramic coater at the time. HMF changed coaters, sent me a new system, and viola my system doesn't have any rust coming through the coating. My belief is that this isn't a UFO generated problem, this is a problem with the coater that Jon will have to address.

Good info on the cermamic stuff.

If I'm not mistaken, and I could be, if the systems are manufactured new they use mild carbon steel and then ceramic coat it. I don't think they Manufacture a stainless sytem and then ceramic coat it.

Mine aren't ceramic coated anywhere. Whatever grade of stainless they are made out of, and it is stainless, They haven't done anything I couldn't polish out in a half hour or so for the whole system, they've gotten pretty bad looking a couple of times.

And they only turn color/rust/discolor or whatever close to the heads where the heat is high.

The curly pipes underneath the rear of the motor that rarely get cleaned good and don't run extremely hot have not and do not rust.

And they are on a near daily driver that gets rained on frequently and only cleaned up well on the weekend.

Maybe Cornell changed the materials they were using????, Or perhaps they have tried to make the best deal they could on some crap material and cranked off an occasional bad batch???

Mine were made/bought new (not by me) from UFO a little over a year ago.

My stock system on my SV is stainless and it gets copper colored but I can clean it up fairly easily.

My Walker pipes are Ceramic coated inside and out and I have zero issues with them. :thumbs up:

I like Dale's head pipes because he did an awesome job following the lines of the frame. He's a perfectionist though so that stands to reason.

If Cornell stayed out of the customer dealings and left it to someone that knows what customer service is, then UFO wouldn't have the bad rap it has and deserves.

Jekyll and Hyde I tell ya! :whistlin:

so after you ve install any HMF, UFO, or Marks do you need to change jet size or reset carbs?

The Max has a tendency to go rich when you put on an aftermarket system. You will need to retune the carbs and a rejet will probably need to be done. I know that when I put on my HMF I went down 2 sizes on the mains to get it back in tune. Remember when you change flow anywhere in the system you have to tune the other parts to bring it back into balance.

Just out of curiousity I took one of those superbad *** magnets from an old tank bag and checked my exhaust last night.

If you stick this magnet to steel you need a screwdriver and a hammer to get it off.

On the exhaust you can tell it has a slight amount of carbon steel in it because the magnet will pull slightly but will not cling strongly enough to keep from falling off, it just falls off.

On a related subject;

Does anyone know if using aeresol ceramic coating in a rattlecan, spraying it down INSIDE THE PIPES and letting it dry good before installing a stainless exhaust help keep it from turning colors.

I had heard of this but always forget before I install one.

Back in 1991 or 92 I used a product called DynoCoat I believe. It was a white thick liquid that was used to coat the inside of some single wall chrome header pipes. In 6 years they never turned more than a very light gold color that easily polished off. The pipes have to be new and you have to follow the instructions carefully. Purchased at a Harley dealer. I'm sure there are even better products available now.

Kinda off subject, but can anyone tell what exhaust Cornell runs on his chromed max on his website????
