Can anybody tell me if it's normal for this harness to hang loose mid air like this or should it be tied to the upper frame tube?

They are generally tucked up by the frame.the air box usually holds them in place. Wouldnt hurt to put a zip tie or two on it.

Exactly what I was thinking about. I just find it weird that most connectors and harnesses are loose on the bike. Perhaps this is from factory, but I think that some past electrical trouble on the bike lead to a lot of unclipping.
When all else has failed, look at the Service Manual, pages 8-24 to 32 refer.
