It's a 1997 with 14,000 miles , just bought it , only got to test ride it in parking lot so didn't notice it till got it home an took it out for a ride

Others with much more knowledge then me will chime in as I am relatively new to the VMAX. My general take is that in 1985 some engineer was stoned out of his mind and decided to design a motorcycle with a giant motor and nothing else to support it such as a Solid Frame, stiff suspension.

There might be something wrong but if your VMAX is completely stock, I am guessing that is the way it rides. I bought mine a couple month ago and I immediately upgraded the front and rear springs, added a fork brace and increase the fork oil to 15w. I also bought new tires. Each item I changed made a difference and all together, the difference has been tremendous.

However, I have only scratched the surface as you will learn soon. Once you get it squared away, you will love it. Funnest bike I have ever owned. Good luck.

Are your rear shocks set the same? Also what other guys said.

I will check the steering head bearings , an make sure the rear shocks are set the same , have new Dunlop tires an correct air pressure , this is my second v-max loved my other one just got to figure this out , thanks everyone ill post to tell how it goes , O an the bike is stock except for super trapp exhaust

Adding to what has been said, check that all relevant fasteners are correctly tight (i.e. yoke clamp bolts, axle nuts and rear s/a nuts and that the bushes are in good condition. Spin the wheels and check for run-out on the rim and tyre.

Check you have the same volume of oil in the fork legs and that the pre-load tubes are the same length.

Check that the s/a's have similar damping.

Check the swinging arm bearings for correct adjustment.

What does it feel like? Mine used to feel like the rear end was sort of oscillating during sweepers at speed

I think alot of handling problems also come from the swing arm. I'd also check that there isn't play in the swing arm bearings.

I'd check the wheel bearings also.

Yep, just grab the top & bottom of the wheels from the side, at 12 o'clock & 6 o'clock, and try to move them towards & away from you. Any play? Replace the bearings.

I can smell the monkey! braced swingarm, 18' carrs and radials, all bearings, frame brace, fork brace, upgraded shocks, progressive fork springs and emulators. Swingarm flex, frame flex and downright unnerving are normal. ...and it has begun.

Wasn't the steering head bearings, an the rear shocks are set the same , when ur riding the bike it will lean left then right like a pendulum never rode a bike that felt like this put it on the center stand back wheel doesn't have any play was wondering if it might be swing arm bearings , but that being said when on center stand there's no play in the back wheel , just took it up the road got on it hard doesn't seem to do it in hard acceleration

Just because I can't wiggle it is it possible that it still could be swing arm bearings
I would think the rear shocks could be putting down force on the swing arm. Try disconnecting them and see if you can feel play. Don't forget to support the bike while removing them.

If it wanders on its own on the highway, your steering bearings might be too tight. Knock the nuts loose and retighten them. Maybe?
