I decided to install one of the Vista Cruise throttle clamps on my '93 Max. I bought the one described as "for Yamaha single and dual cable throttles". I went to install it and found that it will not work on my bike. The throttle sleeve has a 1 1/4" collar next to the switch housing. Naturally, I decide I could make it work by removing plastic from the clamp and removed too much, now it won't clamp down on the throttle.

After looking at their web site, it appears that they don't make one for the 1993 model. Every other year is listed. Is the '93 weird or what?

I think I'm going to buy another and remove less plastic and it will work, unless someone knows of another one that will work on my bike.

Thanks,
Jim

Could you just get some strips of rubber (like from an old inner tube) and fatten it back up again?

Honestly I'm not a big fan of those "throttle clamps". Something about having the throttle jammed open with a piece of plastic doesn't jive with me, especially when it doesn't instantly disengage when the brakes are applied. Plus, it's not very effective for maintaining speed unless you live in the midwest and don't know what a hill looks like. You'll lose a lot of speed going up and gain a bunch going down...perfect for police speed traps at the bottom of hills. And if you have to adjust or engage/disengage it every 2 seconds, what's the point?

If your wrist gets tired from holding the gas, get a crampbuster...it's just a palm panel that clamps onto the grip. My bike came with one, I took it off because I found it kept getting in the way. If I can find it, it's yours for free.

Thanks for the warnings. I've used them before just to rest my hand and when trying to hold a steady RPM for maintenance. I'm not trying for a real cruise control, I have that on my other bike. Yes, I tried shimming it but it doesn't work well.

I had one of those "Cramp Busters" on another bike and it was a real pain, always in the way. I gave mine away too.

I have a crampbuster too and it really didn't help as you have to keep your hand on the bar all the time, what's the use in that? I picked up this unit the other day($19.95) and while I have yet to use on the road it seems to work as advertised in the garage. http://www.2wheelride.com/throttle_pro.html
I ordered the small size for 7/8" bars and have Pro Grip 862 Gomma grips.

It also fits my new line of thinking that keeping it as close to stock looking as possible or otherwise known as anti mod monkey.:duck:

I like my vista cruise! Had to thin down the handle bar mounting width due to the fact that there wasn't enough room between the throttle/brake area, even after loosening and pushing them apart as far as they would go. (stock bars). It doesn't work perfect as described above, but does give enough time to rest my hand and fingers when they get that "tingly" feeling. Cheap too!

vista cruise is perfect, not for cruise control but a 10s relax of the hands. crusing at 90mph on i90 gets boring and crampy, it works great. not sure how the install got messed up tho.

+1 n the vista cruise, short break for the right hand on a long ride. A flip of the thumb and it's off. 5 minute install in stock 89 grips.

was installing one on my bike and kinda did the same , took off a shade too much, i have to go look think i turned the rubber around and it works fine. well in the garage. just make sure that when you turn it off that your throttle still snap!!! closed, otherwise you will end up doing what i did at BR2010 and as everyone can tell you how much of a pain it was chasing that issue of throttle slightly on.
but once set up right works great, makes it easier to take pics with camera in hand when on a ride with the gang lol.

Near as I can determine the best use for a cramp buster is to reach up and slap during syncing when you want to blip the throttle. It's perfect for that! :punk:
DANG. What a great idea! Use one of these throttle clamps to use for synching, that is.

heat grips mess with the 'snap back' too, but its ok!

I've used Brake-A-Way brand throttle locks on a bike before. It works well, but you have to get used to all the space it steels from your grip area. It will manually release itself when you grab the front brake lever - if you're worried about safety. It comes at a stiff price though.

I don't use anything on my Vmax. I just don't go on that many long distance rides with it anymore. On my other bike that I use for distance, I installed a vacuum operated system.

oh no, i use the first one you linked. the problem is my grip is no longer a perfect circle b/c of the wire coming out from under them, so the 'plastic' outside doesn't handle the irregularly perfectly so the throttle sticks. its no big deal b/c it goes away if i disconnect it.

With the throttle pro you can accelerate to pass a car or twist the grip slightly forward to lessen the throttle on downhills. Plus it's a snap to put on/ take off and does not affect the "snap back".
I should have a road test soon enough but not this weekend as they are forecasting _no_ for both Sat and Sun.:damn angry:

Do you have the Symtec grip heaters like I had on Sallymax? I don't think the wire ever bothered the VC on that bike.

There is a slight flex in the crossover bar on the VC that allows for this too Brian....well, maybe not enough for passing a car but I don't use it where I might be passing, usually just for a short bit to shake some blood down into my tingling hands. :bang head:

these ones ive used on other bikes and by far the cleanest, easy to use, super slick

a bit of cash but worth it. maybe one day for the max, see how VC works with heated grips, still waiting on them.
