I have been reading the work shop manuals and see that california had special envirnmental compliance requirements for its Vmax models.

Do the emmission mods affect horsepower and performance?

Are the emission mods superficial bolt-ons or are the internals altered as well?

Would these models still be acceptable stock for bike modifiers to use or is it better to use non-california stock?

Like to here from some owners about their California models.

What are we looking for? The main difference between the cali model and 48 state model is a port in the #2 carb that ties back into a small canister mounted on the left rear frame area. Performance is the same on both models so no advantage to either way. Some other very minor diff but as noted no advantage or disadvantage with either way.

I don't believe it causes much performance loss other than added weight - it's mostly evaporation systems for unburnt fuel. I also don't believe there's anything internal.

I have a Cali bike, but am in NY, what do i need to do to take it off, it's ugly.

That was all I wanted to know if they were less hp,had differant jetting and if anything needed changed after the canister was removed. Bought my 07 last July it is a Cal mod. with canister all ready removed carb plugs drilled out so I kind of thought I should have the carbs checked to see if anything was changed and were in sync.Love the bike wanted one for years!Have road a 650 Maxum since 83 til now.

If you want the Maxim to keep up with the Vmax find a 650 seca turbo and swap all the turbo stuff over. I can give you the list of what you need (but best to find a complete bike). Had my 83 turbo for years and learned a lot on it during that time.

The max is funner though the Turbo is about the only thing to get my adrenalin pumping.

take it off and put a vacuum plug cap on the carb port. That's it.|

one more question, what about the part that is going to the tank? is that a vent for the tank or can it be capped at teh tank inlet?

I have to remember where it's connected??? There should be a vent hose routing down from the tank to the white/blue tip over valve which is open on one end (or a short hose running down and through the swingarm and open on that end).

something like that, going out side now.

goes from the canister to a plastic thing that looks like a mini filter than to the top of the tank

Just unhook from the mini filter (on the bottom side) and leave the rest on. Just a venting system to keep the tank from getting a vacuum lock as the fuel is used up. The mini filter looking thing is your tip over valve to keep from spilling fuel if the bike is laying on it's side. All the canister is doing is charcoal filtering the vapors from the tank and pulling it back into the carb to be burned up.
