Water Pump Cover Insert

How do I separate the insert from the assembly? The main assembly comes off easily with 5 bolts and an o-ring....but then how do I get the center insert out (help before I break something using too much force). Thanks.

If memory serves well the only way to get it out is to break it....it' not designed to come out once in.....but happy to be corrected.
