So I am on my rebuild and putting things back together and came across this wire. Where does it go? Is it a ground?

Is that coming from your R/R? The R/R will be mounted on the backside of your left rear footpeg bracket. If so it needs to go to a good grounding point/ neg battery bolt.
It would be a good idea to remove this bracket and clean ALL the mounting points of the bracket (2 near the swingarm pivot point, one for the exhaust / 2 removable frame points and the 2 bolts mounting the R?R to the backside of the bracket). Once cleaned use a little dielectric grease to maintain the connection points. I do this every year and each time there is always some rust to clean up.
Check out this link as it may help as well if you read his instructions (.PDF) for his grounding kit. I am installing this kit this year, which probably is a good idea if you have the '96 R/R or older Vmax. He also offers several other very nicely put together wiring kits for the starter, a couple different Vboost kits, fan on/off switch, fuel injection, it all in the link above. He responds quickly via email, takes PayPal and parts arrive in less than 7 days (for me anyways).

Sorry, that white connector is where it comes from. That wire then runs to the right side. It's not from the r/r.

You need to follow the wire from the white connector to be sure.

It does look like a ground though, and I would expect it connects either to the battery '-' pole or to the frame ground bolt just in front and above the battery '-' pole.

+1 on the voltmeter... I'd bet my house it's a ground, but I'd still check for 12 volts on it before grounding it.....

Hmmm now that i think it better i think that lead is for newer finned RRs right? Theres a connector for the red positive and one for the grounding that are kept right of the tank behind the side panel...

Up higher on the frame the factory has a grounding bolt. This bolt is commonly used for add ons like a newer style regulator with a ground wire or added grond on an older R/R. Your original R/R came without this wire. Can you trace that wire to the R/R?

I do have the newer r/r. So it IS a ground, right?

If it connects to the unit at the other end, yes. In my case, I ran both the red (Positive) and black (negative) leads from the R/R directly to battery. Gets the most possible charge current to the battery without any bad or dirty connections in the way...

Kyle, you have a Venture R/R on there. The black wire from that could go to negative battery post or frame grounding point.

Hmm, hard to tell. Were you able to trace where the other end of the wire goes to? That would be a big clue as to what this hooks to. Like the others mentioned, I would also see what the voltmeter tells you.
