Decal Application - Rear Fender/mudguard

Hi there

I am trying to sort out the correct color (colour) to repaint the dummy tank etc on my '86 model Vmax I have already applied a repro 'Yamaha' decal to the rear fender/mudguard on the existing paint but wondered if I have it re-painted, were the decals originally applied to the base coat and lacquered over or were they applied afterwards on top of the lacquer? I want to do it the right way. Any ideas folks?

Under the clear on the early models if I remember correctly.

My 95 and 97 were removable therefore not under clearcoat. I actually removed them so there wouldn't be a fading issue. That is before the custom paint obviously...

I agree that many years were on top of the paint but thought those first years were under. Jim could check his 85 and let us know.
