Detachable "screens" on back of brake pads

Howdy people:

As you may know, I suffer from symptomus moronicus...

For the life of me, I cannot figure out why some brake pad manufacturers include a metallic screen-like flat piece that sort of clips on the back of the brake pad, so that the brake pots contact the surface of this screen rather than the actual back of the brake pad.

Anyone out there know the benefit of these screens?

I think noise reduction. Put them back on if you have them.
 
are you talking about the anti-squeak or anti-chatter shims added to the back of the pads? half metal black piece?
 
Thanks for the info...I'll put 'em back on.

Also, for Tugla, I believe that those half metal black pieces are similar to what I was talking about, but on the R1 Blue Spot calipers I use, they are more like drilled-out polished metal pieces.
