would anyone know if a Yamaha fjr1300 differential will fit a 1989 vmax?
or maybe if the housing doesn't fit would the internals fit my housing?

The physical case will fit if I recall correctly as will the driveshaft BUT, the wheel offset is wrong. At least if you try to use the FJR wheel with the Vmax diff you will be way off center with it.

thanks for that info.
what about the internals? can i use the crown wheel and pinion from the fjr into the vmax housing?

You would have the wheel drive fitment issues. Since that is built into the ring gear.
Your choices are Venture 86-93 (3.33 ratio) or Vmax 85-07 (3.66 ratio)

okay i got some time to pull apart the 2004fjr1300 final drive that i recently bought for $20
they only difference i can see is the shaft is longer on the fjr
and the fjr housing does have the shock mount drilled.
they have the same number of teeth pinion and ring gear 33/9
they have the same hub to wheel spline in both and the same offset.
here are some pictures of my old final drive that blew up and the fjr one.
