Kickes in and out of 3rd gear..am I screwed?

My 2006 Vmax has started haveing some 3rd gear issues. I first noticed this when I would roll it on in 3rd gear and I would always feel like I ran over something with the rear tire . Then I noticed on a 3rd gear roll on it kicking in and out of 3rd gear like feeling like a missfire. The problem only happens in 3rd gear. I ride pretty hard and have had issues with missing 3rd gear with this bike since it was fairly new. I just thought I was shifting it wrong. I have even adjusted the shift lever linkage for a more positive engaugement. Do I have to remove the engine assy to fix this? thanks for the help...a discouraged Vmaxer. :damn angry:

Sounds like a worn gear dog and it does require engine removal and partial disassembly (heads don't need to come off though).
