You may or may not know, but the Congress has sold Americans online privacy down the river. It has made it through the House and the Senate and the Trump admin has signaled they're going to sign it. Here's a pretty good article to give a bit of background on what it will mean to you, it explains why the spin of "it's just trading ownership from the FCC to the FTC" is bullshit, and gives you some options on what you'll be able to do to counter it. If you don't know what a VPN is, you may want to start looking into it now.

We've already seen examples of device manufacturers who are snooping into your privacy like the VISIO TVs, and now Congress has signaled your privacy is pretty much open game for anyone willing to pay for it.

One of the many things that sucks about this is that ISPs will no longer be responsible for any security measures on your data. So what this means, as we've already seen from AT&T is that if you want security of your data, they're going to charge you extra for it. That's like staying at a hotel and them charging you extra to have a lock on your hotel room door.

This is why I loathe Congress... regardless of your political affiliation I feel pretty safe to say no citizen asked for this.

It may not seem like a big deal. You might be thinking "I have nothing to hide." I get it. I've got a heavy background in information security and i can tell you -- it still matters to you even if you have nothing to hide. With the bulk collection of many points of your personal data you'd be amazed at how much information people can get and how complete of a picture of you. Lots of different info security terms of this. When I first got trained in InfoSec in the Air Force over 20 years ago we called them E.E.F.I.s. Essential Elements of Friendly Information. One pice of friendly/unclassified data may not tell you much. But collect enough points of unclassified data and you can piece together a bigger picture. There is a pretty ugly underworld out there that already does some sick shit to people that they don't even realize.

I agree. WH has indicated the Pres wil sign this. So much for watching out for the common man.

Oh crap, now I'm gonna get in trouble for my collection of VMax porn. All the pipes, paint jobs, mods..... All gone!

Seriously, this shit is gonna cause a lot of innocent people a lot of trouble.

I had a conversation today w/another friend about the bill being passed, and he wasn't happy. Just another example of not being able to have a modicum of privacy where there's $$$ to be made. The most benign result is thast your phone will start ringing off the hook withy telemarketers, and your internet inbox will get more crap spam. It's coming. To paraphrase our POTUS: "SAD!" Except I didn't tweet it at 3 a.m. I don't do twitter, I don't do facebook.

And of course the salt on the wound is they're making this money off of you and you get NO benefits from it. So first they're getting their money from you just paying for the internet service. Then they make a second hit of money by selling your info. Is there ANY benefit the customer gets out of this? Nope none. They'll float some hypothetical scenario of it may lower your subscription fee, but that's bunch of bull.

Nothing cam be done to protect personal information. It's all a scam. ALL of it. The piece of paper we get from financial institutions about our privacy is worthless. If anybody can make money off all of us, they will one way or another. Think about the whole scenario. What do we treasure? We will spend to protect that.
We have an unprecedented housing development in our city. Guess what happens next. Home break-ins were the non for a few years until the home security people were on the majority of the new builds. Now, it's a sporadic event.

This should come as no surprise to anyone. Our privacy and freedom is under constant threat, always being chipped away at. I have been using TOR for many searches and now with this a VPN is something many of us are going to have to learn about. It is incumbent upon us to counter these things as well as we can. So one of the few truly good things to come out of the Obama administration is on the chopping block. I had high hopes for our current administration but fortunately I did not have high expectations.
