Re: Rear rim bushings wont come out!!!

Wow, that's saying something.

Re: Rear rim bushings wont come out!!!

What about running a tap into the damper, threading a bolt in, and then slide hammer it out? Not that I plan to do it, but that is what I would try.

Re: Rear rim bushings wont come out!!!

the rubber itself? u'd just pull the bolt out eh?

Re: Rear rim bushings wont come out!!!

I can assure you that pulling that puppy out with the rubber damper intact is impossible. The rubber acts like a damper and cancels any nice pulls by the slide hammer. That is how I tried it first, with a smaller sized puller inside the rubber damper.

I still am going to feel better with them out and getting the wheels painted. My powder coating specialists said no way would they guarantee that the rubber would be usable, let alone in tact after the stripping temp and then the paint booth.

Not a job for most, but I have one under my belt now.

hey man i give ya credit! haha. i'd sure let the new ones sit in the freezer for a few days before i tried to install them!

Re: Rear rim bushings wont come out!!!

Well let me tell you, that rubber had to be vulcanized like a tire. That is how it was reacting to the things I gave it. It was resilient as anything. Only boredom at home, blood, sweat and almost tears got me through such a feat!

Well that and not giving up to a machine $hop.

looks great man!

There is a bearing in the rear differential that is a total MF'r for all the same reasons plus it's hard to hold the diff while working on it. Probably the same story whereas it just never needed replacing in the first place! There is a special below for those engineers that designed these things. I've never read or heard of a factory tool for removal. Anyone else know of one?

Nope, the cage bearing sucks to get off. You usually have to destroy it. If you have a welder it comes out very easily once you get the inner cage and needles out of the way. Tack a bead and then you can get it out that way (the other parts out of the way first).
