I'm beginning to put the bike back together now. The frame and related parts have been shot blasted and powder coated. Now I need to sort out the rear shocks. The rubber bushes on mine that connect it to the frame are broken to say the least. As far as I am aware you cant get these separately....right? I think I'd have to get the rear shocks as a complete unit. If this is the case then I was wondering if to get something other than the factory fitted shocks. I've been thinking of maybe some XJR1300 shocks. Basically...I need new shock recommendations if I cant get those rubber bushes.

What do people think???

I can vouch for the progressive 416, fantastic shocks for the money.

New shocks would be better but, you can get the bushings for the original shocks quite easily, most auto shops that fit supension will have a variey of different bushings.

Is that so??? I'd rather get the bushes for now if possible. But I live in the UK and i might not be able to source them. I'll give it a try. Thanks!

Speaking of shock bushings, I'd like to get a set for my 440's that have a larger ID, but the same OD. Anyone know where to get something like this?

My 440's are great but I was still using the stock shocks that were 17 years old at the time. I picked them up for 80% off retail so it was a deal I couldn't pass up, but if I had to pay retail I would have went with the 418's due to them having both spring preload and rebound adjustments.

Where on earth are these shops that have bushes? I went to a specialist bike tuner who regularly does VMax's, and he had no idea where to get them from. I imagine Yamaha, to keep costs down, used a set of generic ones. So is there a website that sells generic bushes?

A significant improvement on OE but the springs are a bit on the light side and can bottom out if you have a pillion. OK for solo unless you are significantly lardy.
Also the yellow/ gold can clash awfully with some paint schemes! :puke: :barf:

An alternative would be Hagon's - from ?130 for basic units then varying degrees of sophistication up to Nitro's at ?370.

If you speak to Hagon they may have a suitable bush?

Hagon cant help, they say this is COMMON problem, and their bushes do not fit the Yamaha stock shocks...sucks. It would be an awesome help if any of you guys from the US find any, please do let me know. Else I'll have to get new shocks. Or if I'm lucky a nice pair of second hand ones. I'm trying to do this in as cheaper way as possible, hence why I'm scrounging as much as I can.

This is the latest picture of my restoration project...

...so shot blasted, powder coated matt black (looks more like satin though) and front forks with new seals all set up. Next will be wheels, petrol tank and of course shocks :)

After that I'll start rebuilding the engine.

And just to really emphasise how much scrounging I am doing, check out my home made bike stand composed of: the legs from an old coffee table, come scrap wood to make the base and a bit of bubble rap to protect the frame.

Haha, that is the true biker way!

Are you going to the Southern Comfort VMAX Rally in West Sussex in July? Best place to ask around for things you might need along the way for your build.
