Shifter fell off

So I went out for a ride tonight, pulled away from a light, went to shift into 2nd and all I found with my foot was air... looked down, shifter was hanging. Checked traffic, and pulled off the road, dismounted and quickly realized that the circlip (sp?) was missing. I put the shifter back on the shaft and made my way home, with my foot under the shifter with sideways pressure to keep it in place.

Question, what size circlip (sp?) do I need? Is it commonly available just about anywhere or is it a specialized part?

I went to Ace hardware and got it. I measured the shaft and it's 12 mm.

..... I guess I could have done that.... but it's hot and muggy and I just wanted to get some shorts on. lol
