I'm doing a ground-up rebuild and I have a question about shimming the middle gear drive. I followed the procedure in the manual which was easy and straightforward in establishing what shim package I will need. I'm just wondering what I'm supposed to be accomplishing. In the grand scheme of things, what purpose do these shims have? I'm getting ready to join the case halves and want to make sure my set-up is right before I do. Thanks.:ummm:

It's like setting up the rear differential on a car. Makes sure the engagement is set correctly.

For a crown wheel and pinion (such as the middle grar and final drive) to work efficiently and quietly it need various parameters to be set:

Backlash - the clearance between the crown wheel & pinion

Bearing pre-load - the taper roller bearings are set a little tight to eliminate any free play.

Depth of mesh - how deep the pinion sits into the crown wheel.

Various methods are employed to set the above:
Torque settings for pre-load.
Crush sleeves - these are designed to distort as they are tightened and when installed impart a known pre-load.
Shims - used to control pre-load or depth of mesh.
