Anyone who's heard the Car Talk radio show knows about these, they're weekly riddles/puzzled, usually with some kind of automotive or mechanical spin to them. Some are kind of easy and others are tougher. There seems to be a lot of smart cookies hanging around VMF so figure I'd post this weeks (the answer hasn't been released yet, last week's is answered every saturday along with a new one given). See how quickly as a community we can break them?

Week of April 30th

Many cars have a four-space digital clock in the dashboard. How many times per day (24 hour period) will the clock be displaying 3 of the same digit? Assume it's "civilian" time, not 24hr military time.

The first person to correctly respond will get a set of my patented extra stretchy powerbands. These give your Vmax power over a much wider RPM range and are less likely to break if you over-rev the motor. A must for any performance minded rider.

a lot, I have too much tequila on board to figure it out.

24?:ummm:

Edit, I was definitely wrong on the first guess. Maybe this one will be right?

1:11, 11:01, 11:10, 11:12, 11:13, 11:14, 11:15, 11:16, 11:17, 11:18, 11:19, 11:21, 11:31, 11:41, 11:51, 12:11=17
2:22, 12:22=2
3:33=1
4:44=1
5:55=1

Total=22
Then, it happens twice a day so =44

Edit again. Forgot about 10:00
I'm coming up with 46 now.

6 times if you mean only 3 of the same numbers and the 4th number must be different or 8 times if the forth number is allowed to be the same as the 3 other digits.

Edit: I am betting he means three of a given number not all the combinations given any number. Otherwise I am seriously wrong.

am/pm (so X2)
1:11,2:22,3:33,4:44,5:55,10:00,10:11,11:01,11:10,11:12,11:13,11:14,11:15;11:16,11:17, 11:18,11:19,12:11,12:22,
so that's 38!
If you interpret it to mean, at least 3 of the same # & possibly 4 then you have to include
(am/pm) 11:11

but I go with 38

5 times each 12 hrs.

10 times in every 24 hrs.

01:00
01:11
02:22
03:33
04:00
04:44
05:00
05:55
06:00
07:00
08:00
09:00
10:11
ok, never mind. I'm wrong.
10:00
11:00
11:10
11:12
11:13
11:14
11:15
11:16
11:17
11:18
11:19
11:01
12:11
12:22

Now I'm up to 27 times per 12hr, and 54 times per 24 hr period.

46
If you interpret it to mean, at least 3 of the same # & possibly 4 then you have to include
(am/pm) 11:11
which would make it 48

I guess mentioning a "4 digit" digital clock was just confusing, though I've never seen a digital clock that reads "05:35" or whatever, it just says "5:35" with the first space blank.

OK, here's the solution. Starting at noontime....

12:11
12:22
1:11
2:22
3:33
4:44
5:55
10:00
10:11
11:01
11:10
11:11-19 (11:11 is showing three of the same digit)
11:21
11:31
11:41
11:51
...to midnight

So 24 in a 12hr period, a total of 48 per day. No winners, but I can see how the question left some room for interpretation.

OK, here's the new one, which is more straightforward.

"I was driving in my car as it started to rain. I remembered my wiper blades were worn out and not working well, so I pulled into a parts store to buy new ones. I didn't remember what size the blades were, so I estimated the length using my arm, and matched that up at the rack in the shop. I determined I needed 18" blades, which I bought two of and went back to the car with. It was starting to rain harder, and I figured I could install one blade without getting soaked. However, I found the blade to be an inch too short. I ran back into the parts store, and instead of wasting time returning the other blades, I convinced the clerk to let me take a 19" blade out to the car. However, this one was an inch too long. I thought for sure the blades had been packaged incorrectly, however when compared, the 18" and 19" blades were in fact one inch different. I convinced the clerk to let me take both pairs out to my car to figure out which I needed. "

Q: Which blades did I buy?

I got one;

Your on a trek through a strange land and come to two doors blocking your path, you must go through one of the doors.

One door is the door to death, the other is the door to life.

You don't know which door is which.

Each door has a guard, one of the guard ALWAYS lies, and the other guard ALWAYS tells the truth. You don't know which is which of the guards either.

You get to ask ONE question only, to only ONE of the guards.

What do ask????????????
