What are these numbers?

Noticed these couple numbers etched into the engine case near the motor #... underneath the #2 cylinder headpipe. Definitely looks done by hand instead of the machined stencil of the motor #. There's two small raised boxes that would seem to be for these two two-digit numbers. Mine say 95 and 94....bike is a '97. Any ideas?

Yeah yeah, my engine heads and exhaust are all faded out. I'll repaint it one of these days.

Mine has it too....mine number is prefixed by 2WE which is part of the engine number?

They are the codes to figure up the mid gear shims if I remember correctly.

Parts of mine match the VIN #, but not all....

The numbers 059870 in his picture are the last numbers of the VIN. In the later years the vin didn't always match the engine vin.

Correct!

But only for those shims under big middle drive gear bearing.

Shims under yoke/cross joint assembly are a diffrent story.
