That is how I changed my stock springs to Progressive spring on my '92. when I installed my Ricor Intiminator valves I removed my forks so I could do a full service on the wear parts and be sure I completely got all of the old oil out of the fork tubes.

I have my shift light set at 8700 then later added a Dyna 3000 which I originally set the rev limiter to 9200 but I'm setting the rev limit lower this year to 9000. I hit the limiter most often in second gear and sometimes 3rd but really no reason to push the engine all the time like I used to...

If it doesn't want to move up and off, try moving it down just a little to get some light amount of lube to then slide it up and off. This is what I needed to do with my '92 and of course I had to replace the O-rings.
