Pretty recently I had 2 Hondas (02 Hornet 919, 04 VTX1800)with same problem: bad speed sensors. I installed crank sensors from 04 Dodge Neon.($20 Autozone) Let me know if you want more details.

Hydraulic freeplay comes from piston, pushing fluid out of small hole. Remove cover, slowly pull lever and watch stream from small hole. Find video on youtube.
