Fuel from needle jet at idle? WTH????

I think my issues were driven by a few factors. The oem venture fuel level (14mm) was too high to work right with the vmax bits (ie: drawing fuel around the needles at idle). The carb holders were in the process of breaking down and had me chasing my tail on and off. Testing good on a leak...

Fuel from needle jet at idle? WTH????

just took bike for a burn and 100% improvement! its still off a touch though. tiny bit of lean chug (barely noticable) in 2nd and third gear with throttle from 1500 rpm and a couple small pops in the exhaust at steady cruise. but thats all stuff that should be able to be dealt with through...

Fuel from needle jet at idle? WTH????

Thanks, compliments are always appreciated. :) Most people walk on by, but I get the occasional double take/odd look from the initiated that notice the cylinder fins peeking out or hear the vboost solenoid run its test on startup....:whistlin: Will be bitchin' once sorted, its just the...

Fuel from needle jet at idle? WTH????

Yes sir, Gary has given me a little help on a couple things. The ignitech program and hooking up the vboost to it being most notable. While his bike is nice, I went a couple different routes than he did. Gary's bike is a screaming yellow zonker, I wanted more of a sleeper. His started out...

Fuel from needle jet at idle? WTH????

No worries, it's all good. But you can't argue with the wet float heights being 16mm even with they way they currently look inside. Wet height is what matters, that why the manual gives wet and not dry. Fingers crossed....

Fuel from needle jet at idle? WTH????

Ok. Carbs back in. Bike running. 16mm wet level. No fuel shooting out around needles like before. Bike needs choke to start but comes off it in short order. Seems normal compared to how my other bikes warm up (20 c here right now) Synch is much more stable and more easily matched than it...

Fuel from needle jet at idle? WTH????

so, maybe its because these are very early 83 carbs and may have some production differences from later years (possibly the diffence in the float needles) but they dont seem to conform to anything in the forum recommendations. either casting marks dry measurements. this: equals a 0.979 dry...

Fuel from needle jet at idle? WTH????

i think im going to try and split the difference in float level specs. venture manual calls for 14mm +- 0.5, max is 16mm and the forum preference seems to be for 17 mm. well, 17mm appears to be too lean for these particular carbs. less than 15mm has been proven to start bleeding around the...

Fuel from needle jet at idle? WTH????

as mentioned, not a problem in my setup. either the resistance or the + or - issue.

Fuel from needle jet at idle? WTH????

that was interesting. raised a float and checked the wet setting. went from 16.5-17 to 16mm even. checked dry float height and works out to 1.057 thats interesting, very interesting.....

Fuel from needle jet at idle? WTH????

yep, float needles are right for these carbs. as previously mentioned, these are steel tips (not rubber) on the needles. these are venture carbs, not max carbs. Ive verified these are the right needles for the seats by parts numbers. 83-85 venture were the steel tips, 86-93 were "rubber". max...

Fuel from needle jet at idle? WTH????

alright, this now i know this damned thing is ******* with me! level the bike (at the carb throat flanges), check the wet level with the bike cold and its down around 20-24 mm. gank the carbs out and split the rack. level the carbs and bench check the wet level: between 16-18mm across all 4...

Fuel from needle jet at idle? WTH????

no worries there. Im using an ignitech, not a stock tci. the usual concerns with cop on a max/venture dont apply here as the ignitech runs them "as is". building my own cops was electronics 101 simple for me. no problems there. ingitech: dwell set to auto, vboost control enabled. Im lean, im...

Fuel from needle jet at idle? WTH????

This mother trucker is driving me nuts! Ive had hard to dial in bikes before, but this is a new level of pita! Tried to ride to work this morning and lean chug all over the place. Got to 3 turns out and could only minimize it. Tried turning them in just in case the bike was faking me out with...

Fuel from needle jet at idle? WTH????

So, more weird behavior today. Rode it to work and back home at lunch. Never more than 1/4 throttle application (I have it marked with tape). Pul the plugs and rh cylinders show a bit rich, LH bank shows lean. Kinda fits as I would hear the occasional burp/fart from the LH side. Easy...

Fuel from needle jet at idle? WTH????

Good suggestion, but it's all good. I'm running a SH775BA series regulator and the output is rock solid when running. Even at idle its in the 14 V range. Converting to the series reg was one of the better changes to the bike. I'm running a cop conversion and an ignitech also. It was my...

Fuel from needle jet at idle? WTH????

Well, ran well this morning and i thought i just about had it licked when it laid down and started backfiring badly. Pulled off to the side and it died. Hit the starter and nothing. First thought was; jeebus crisp I seized the damn thing! Then i looked up at the voltmeter. 8 volts. Aha...
