Bought a 1998 this winter and not being the most mechanical type of guy, what different options are there in relation to the air box? Thx in advance for the advice

I've seen people do some pretty messed up things to their air boxes but I've never seen anybody really get anything meaningful out of it.

There is one mod I know about for the airbox that Morley's Muscle makes. He calls it the Muscle Jet Kit.

It basically turns the entire top of the airbox into a filter rather than using the smaller interior filter. It's offered several different ways. The link I posted is where you send him your airbox and he does it all for you and sends it back. He also offers it outright and in a do-it-yourself kit.

If you decide to go this route, you'll want to do the exchange. It's worth the extra shipping to have Sean do it and do it perfectly the first time.

Morley's mod is probably most forgiving in that just a bit of needle tuning is needed. Using stage 7 needles makes it much easier; otherwise, probably need to increase main jet size significantly and shim needles.

Next would be individual filter pods seen with a DJ stage 7 kit. Similar to Morley's setup except a bit less midrange. Stock jetting is fine although lowering will help a bit.

Other than that, just replacing stock air filter with aftermarket won't see any gains except perhaps with reusability. The airbox itself is the restriction, not the filter.

I've never heard of anybody having to change jets for simply changing the air filter.
You don't have to. I did with stock since main jets are too rich in my neck of woods. 147.5's were perfect.
