Looks I should just go with the newer/used air filter box, and just remove the Y. And throw in some 145 jets while I'm at it. I'm assuming an air filter box out of 97 will fit fine in my 86, or pretty much any year for that matter right?

I am new to the V-max so please excuse this but in all the other bikes I had when I switched from a stock filter to a K&N stock replacement I always had to rejet due to it went too lean and would get the decel pop. Thats even after I tried to get away with just adjusting the a/f screws still was lean. Not to highjack this but when you adjust the Vmaxs a/f screws has anybody adjusted them by ear method ( turn it all the way in and then back it out hearing the engine surge method)? I hear you have to tune the V4s didfferent the the I4s vs all being turned out at the same setting?

Yes you can do this. If the vboost is closed each carb is feeding only one cylinder.

Doing it this way very likely give you different turns out on each screw due to variances in carb synch, valve seat condition and any other variable that you can think of probably.

The REAL trick is getting the damn bike Synched close enough that it will run on ALL for cylinders at idle. Once you get it firing on all 4 cylinders you could do the A/F screws by ear, I do it that way, you'll hear it when the cylinder stops contributing....I set 'em just out far enough that the cylinder will fire, and then a little more..

Another trick is one of those cheap infrared temp guns pointed at the exhaust pipe right where it comes out of the cylinder head....Only works with an aftermarket exhaust, the double wall factory can't be done. It can really help troubleshoot too
