another plug wire question

Ive read many "this is what i like to use for plug wires posts" but can anyone tell "what should be used"
i have to assume the wires that are on it are originals(1988) and the last vmax i had i remember using yellow accel wires with ngk plug caps,but ill be damned if i can remember which.
i bought 4 stock ngk plugs tonight,and i would like to change out the wires when i change em

As I recently learned, copper core (like Accel) wires were OE on the Max.

Unless the wires are visibly damaged or arcing to ground, there's probably no need to replace. If the bike runs good I wouldn't worry about them. Just cut a very small bit off each end and re-fit the cap...that will take care of any corrosion that may have occurred. Add a teensy bit of dielectric to keep moisture at bay.

However, I can put in a good word for Magnecor as making excellent wires(custom made for free) at a reasonable cost, and providing phenomenal customer service. They made me a set for my Magna because the OE's were no longer available. Measured the old ones(wire length, cap size), and I had a custom set a couple days later. Fit perfect, worked great. Think the set of four for my Magna was like $75 shipped or so(the OE if it had been available was $30 per wire), so in my view I saved on the deal and got a better product.

I use a 7mm copper core lead with a good silicone jacket. The NGK plug caps are recommended too. 5000 ohm resistance is stock, and most of the NGK plug caps are the same with resistance. This will give you the same specs as right off the showroom floor, and the silicone leads will last forever.
I run a set that I bought on ebay. The guy's getting a bad rap with someone here, but if you look into it, the guy had every right to treat the situation like he did. I would have. I guess respect breeds respect, disrespect earns the earful.

Anyhow the set was priced right, half the cost of the $75 set for that honda, and the seller answered all of my questions no problem. Even called me on the phone to explain it all to me. Top notch all the way. Got the set in the mail within 3 days. Even tosses in the wire speraters and wire ties.

I'd have no problem buying another set from the guy, he does Excellent work, and uses nothing but the best cable lead I've ever used. Heck of a nice guy. Bike has never run better. Yesterday I called and ordered up a set of Iridium NGK 2202 plugs too, nice price. Go for it.

Just trying to help a brother. Actually trying to help 2 brothers, unless he don't mind the $75.

I'm not putting you down, rawarrior, magnecore is good stuff and I'm sure they did you a good job. Money is tight these days with me, I'm certain I'm not alone with that.

I guess im just being over paranoid,i was under the understanding that over time the copper inside the wires breaks down,causing loss in electrical feed,but ill try cleaning the ends up 1st,and see what the does for me,thx for the replies

Steven, true but it lasts 2-3 times longer than the carbon core. Ask Heretic. I replace my plug wires every 3 years. Each year I test and trim 1/8 inch from each wire end if necessary. I get plain copper core wire by the foot. When getting 5 feet of wire plus 4 NGK boots it's less than $20.

I've seen 7mm copper core cable at NAPA, I doubt that you'd find it with the chain-store auto suppliers.

If you run into a bind with finding it, also try a marine supply, or a good industrial supply house
. Copper isn't used with anything as far as street automotive, other than competition use.

A lot of the sprint cars run copper, maybe with drags too, not really sure. :ummm:

Anytime that the radios aren't used most race applications go with copper.

The only industries that still use copper core would be the import street bikes, recreational (atvs/quads etc) and snowmobile, marine and industrial. That's about it.

7mm is advised. An 8mm 'could' be used, but the coil towers are designed for 7mm, so are the NGK caps. The 8mm will be hard to fit, and likely won't go completely into the coil unless you'd trim or pencil the outer sheathing.

8mm won't give you any gain anyhow, other than a thicker insulation. Core size is the same.

A lot of guys seem to think that a bigger wire will give more power, which isn't true. It's a wire, not a hose.

My apologies for suspecting you of being "that guy".....just seemed a bit of a wild coincidence there.
Where I spent $75 on wires for my old Honda, I just spent less than $30 for COP's for my Max....misfire seems to be solved and overall response seems to be "crisper". Idle is definitely smoother also. Can't beat that! Plus then your ignition system should be maintenance-free pretty much forever. No coils to go bad or wires to degrade.
