Take off the passenger seat (2 Phillips screws), remove and reinstall 4 existing bolts, replace passenger seat. Just takes a few minutes.

I am interested in the brackets and luggage rack (not the backrest). They appear to be polished aluminum in the pics but you say something about powdercoating in one of your posts. Do you have the polished aluminum powdercoated clear? Also I have a Corbin seat. Will it fit with the Corbin? Do you have any pics of the brackets mounted with the seat off so we can see how it is installed? Finally, how much will it cost for the rack, brackets, hardware, etc shipped to zip 75044?
Thanks.

The rack is polished aluminum, the steel mounting brackets are powder coated to match the existing grabrail. I will take pics and post here in a few days, as soon as I get brackets back from powder coater. Cost would be $140 + 10.70 shpg = $150.70. I don't know exactly how the Corbin compares to the stock passenger seat, but I'm pretty sure it would still fit.

Not a very good shot, but shows the mounting points under the rear seat. Very strong mount. Bracket is not yet powder-coated. When powder coated, it will match the existing grab rail. Final version can be seen in my pics at the beginning of this thread.
Edit: Powder coating costs more than I expected, it is a 2-stage process, including a final clear-coat. Price for the rack and mounting brackets (without backrest) would be $149.95 plus shipping.

OK, here's a shot of the brackets I just got back from the powder coater. The 2 vertical plates and mounting tabs are 1/8" and the horizontal base is thicker. It's very strong.

Thanks for the info. I need the rack to mount a Givi trunk on the bike for trips. Could you measure the rack (side to side and front to back)? Need to see if the Givi bracket will fit. Also is the plane of the rack equal to or above the level of the stock passenger grip? Need to see if the bracket can overlap the grip if it is too large to fit behind the grip. Hope that makes sense.

Thanks again for your trouble.

Top of rack is flush with top of grab rail. Length from rear of grab rail to end of the rack is 9", overall width of rack is 11". Hope that helps.

I think that will work. I have to get to my storage unit and measure the bracket and see if it will fit properly. It is designed to attach to a flat luggage rack. Just don't know the size needed. Will let you know as soon as I can. Thanks again....

I have not been able to test it with the stock backrest, no other Maxes in the area, but it definitely fits with the stock grab bar. The one in the pics at the beginning of this thread is my own backrest from a Honda Magna which I adapted to be interchangeable between the 2 bikes.

if someone were to send you a stock backrest without the luggage rack on it, would you be able to build a luggage rack to go with the OEM backrest? i have a short grab rail that i will be putting back on mine shortly because i switch out the backrest and lower grab rail when i ride passengers so my backrest will be just hanging in the basement for awhile. i would really like to get a luggage rack built to go with my OEM backrest if this would be something your interested in doing while i have my backrest off, let me know.

MtnMax/Magniac...........Great work. At what angle is the backrest? My cutie would probably prefer to sit up a bit straighter. Could the angle be adjusted or would that need to be changed in the design? I'm very interested in getting a backrest and rack. -06MattMax

The backrest shown is from my Magna, which I can switch from Max to Magna and back again. It sits about 15 degrees from vertical, which my wife tells me is pretty comfortable. Changing the angle would require re-locating the holes in both the side rails of the rack and the mounting brackets. Not an easy task, since the side rails are CNC machined in some quantities. Would require re-programming, don't know much they would charge for doing that, but for one-off I'm pretty sure it would be cost-prohibitive.

Cool. If she doesn't like the angle I could shim the top of the pad out some. It is bolted on right? Also, is there an option for the plate on the rear that has the V4 cut in it? Nice work but it looks a bit 80's for my taste.

80's ? lol The backrest shown is from a 3rd generation Magna, which was unchanged from '94 to '03, when it was discontinued (again). The backrest itself is not included, as it is available elsewhere (Hondaline, eBay, and several other sites) for less than I could make it for. The "V4" plate is separate, for $12.95.
I started this project simply because several people on here were complaining that the stock Yamaha rack and backrest were no longer made, and were very expensive, when they could be found.

As of now, it's just the brackets and luggage rack. I have not been able to find a source for the backrest that would cost less than you can get elsewhere. I am currently checking into having a friend with a tube bender make some bars, and adding pads, but no price yet.
