Going to try something similar

It took a lot of looking to find a 4" X 4" L-angle that was as thin as 1/8". I found it at Industrial Metal Supply http://www.industrialmetalsupply.com/?utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=brand and they cut a 5" length and gave it to me for free at closing time on a Saturday evening!

OK! got the job done:

2 round tail lights mounted on a back plate from eBay + 40x40mil Alu 90 degree angled bar from local HW store. And the rest was all about sawing, drilling and filing:

Looks like the VF1000R taillight frim the 1980's. A neat job, it looks great.

Just found this, did exactly the same to mine a few weeks ago with some 3mm alu plate and a bit of creativity with an angle grinder! Yours looks like a nice job.

Looks like a chopped stock fender to me.

Correct. It is a chopped stock rear fender.
BTW ... I don't use it anymore. If anyone is interested, please PM.
It goes with taillight, rear turnsignal, licenseplate holder and grabbar.
