Haven't used the custom made retainer ring on any of the bikes we've built, sold the upgrade too, or suggested it too and it's worked just fine. The bolts won't allow the spring to shift off once in place anyway.

sean, do you think that most guys' setups that have "slipped" the springs out of alignment may be a result of under torqued bolts? i say this because, with every write up that i have read, there is always a disclaimer to not torque the bolts down to the specified force, but to rather tighten it them up "firm" with loc-tite. i wonder because "firm" is very subjective, that those who opt for this "thicker" housing, haven't firmed up the bolts enough. :ummm:

Fixing something that doesn't need fixed
well, then i ain't definitely gonna bother now. now that the Guru-Max has spoken. :punk::worthy:

I used a clutch spring retainer for my 1200 and 1500 Gen 1 that was twice the depth to house the double spring arrangement. Some say you need it and some dont. I am not a mechanic or an engineer. I used the twice depth retainer also on my gen 2 for my own piece of mind. Just take yours to any machine shop and have copied with twice the depth. I have used my local machine shop to run quanities of 10 or more for the Gen 2 and see no problem doing this for the gen 1. I would sell for $37.00 each to cover my machine shop charges, packaging and USA shipping. yes, I make a few bucks for my time and effort. [email protected]

I never had a problem with the double d in stock housing except for I just dont like the feel. I have had good luck with the PCW its cheap to buy & holds up well. I had stock Yamaha plates & PCW spring with over 50,000 miles & was at the drag strip every weekend only problems I had were driveshafts breaking.

I have a PCW spring, it works great. Little stiffer lever pull but not bad. Love those second gear and sometimes third gear wheelies.:punk:

I tighten up the bolts until it hits bottom and then just a little snug past that. It's very obvious when they are all the way down.

For people that spend so much money on their bikes are you worried about a less than 50 dollar part? PCW HD spring isn't that much as well... For what i understood Ricks addresses that problem on Gen 2 not Gen1. I never heard of anyone having any trouble with DD on Gen 1... And Gen2 is not my game so i cannot say **** about it...

LOL, Rick doesn't get on here often. I have seen the rings he makes in person and they are well made so anyone considering them can buy it with confidence. I just will say that it won't hurt anything to have it but I have never had the need for one.

My DD is done and i will keep it for now. It is a drag ready clutch. I can shift it easy and smooth or If I shift in the v-boost range this clutch set up hits hard and forward. No slip at all. If i go on a long trip i might try barnett or pcw set up. Now that i know how esay a vmax clutch is to do. Im thinking of doing Sean Morleys oil pressure seal fix and the clutch needs to come out to do it so i might put that $37 part in at that time.

I looked under rick rash and found his bike and i see he is using a barnett spring conversion on his bike.

Mike, if you talk with John @ PCW,He will tell you the barnett will slip when you put some good HP to it..They use only yami friction plates(claim there the best)and their HD spring for $49. They also add one friction plate to the stack. They built a 1260 and 1500 for Rick. I pulled my slipping barnett spring and installed his HD spring,No more slippy. Just my two cents.

I think it should be clarified that they do not add one more friction to the stack. They replace the half friction and dampening parts with a full size friction. Yes, the barnett slips with an engine making good power.

I used new bolts, tightened to the correct tension, and one of them broke.
Never again!

I ran a Barnett for a season to compliment my clear clutch cover. I later had the spring polished out and went back to the DD. I have used the barnett with heavy springs and still found the DD the best option. My clutch fibers lasted twice as long with the DD compared to the barnett. I only use stock Yamaha friction plates. Picture was old.

I new it was for the look. I just had to bust you balls about it. It is a good look.

Maybe I should just slither back to the Star Vmax Sight!! LOL Is the clutch spring retainer the same size on the Warrior as the Gen 1? The Gen 2 is a 5 3/4" and the Gen1 is a 6" spring. Ohh my busted balls.

rick rash

Just confirmed on the Star Vmax Forum the Warrior and gen 1 are the same part number. Now just gotta get 10 people interested in one for a 10 piece run.

Thanks for your input rick. Stick around here its more fun.

I agree with Sean here; We have done DOZENS of DD clutch mods (we replace the half-disc with a full disc, & remove the anti-chatter hardware while we're in there as well...) with NO problems with plate shift/slip...

I think it was either a 'keyboard jockey', or someone who just didn't snug the bolts, that came up with the idea of plate shift...

(You CAN also over-tighten, & snap a post off as well...So be firm, but gentle...lol)

Works for us, & works WELL, without any aftermarket retainer needed.

Hope this helps.:eusa_dance:
