So I've got about 400 miles and one week on my Max, and it is everything I thought it would be.

But I'm noticing that when I am downshifting into 2nd, it sometimes doesn't quite 'connect' and there's a bit of a subtle grind sound, then it goes into neutral. This doesn't happen every time, and it seems as though when I blip the throttle this doesn't happen as much. It started off very subtle, and I can't tell if I'm just not shifting firm enough, or if it's something more.

I have had zero problems upshifting, and I have been very gentle with my shifts as I become accustomed to the Max.

Any ideas as to how serious this is?

sounds like you better give sean morley a call, might be 2nd gear issues popping up on you. dont think shift segment causes that as ive had that issue and you just end up with a dead feeling shifter and no gears.

Ive experienced this on my 02 as well. I never really thought it was a problem though.Just kinda got familiar with the tranny.:biglaugh:

another easy thing is how old is the oil? maybe start with a fresh oil chg and others said adjust the linkage if out of spec

There are upshift dogs (the normal ones to wear out first) and downside dogs. Probably got some wear on them but it doesn't sound like anything I would worry about it yet.

Sean

Sounds like it's not quite selecting. Try adjusting the selector linkage so you can give it a bit more down movement. (ie make the pedal sit a bit higher) Sometimes that makes it easier to get a full "clunk".
Everyones foots is different. ;-)

are you shifting with the speed too fast? sometimes if i shift too soon into second it doesn't like it if say i'm going 50 mph or something. (not sure if its 50, just an artbitrary number for now).

i WHEN I DOWN SHIFT EVERY BIKE I HAVE HAD MY ENTIRE LIFE , I ALWAYS " BLIP " THE THROTTLE A SPLIT SECOND BEFORE I PUSH THE LEVER DOWN AND IT GOES RIGHT IN !

hey copy catter...........was just gonna say that

and ya i bet it goes right in :rofl_200::rofl_200: thats what she said

Thanks guys, I feel a bit better. Nothing like the shock of a possible bad 2nd gear on a new purchase to put a little scare in ya!

I have been blipping my throttle with downshifts, not just because it helps shifting, but because it sounds so frickin' good! I drilled the stock mufflers and did the V-boost unplug trick, and now Max sounds awesome at idle, at take off, and when slowing down. The only time it doesn't sound good is when it's turned off. I try to make that as infrequent as possible!

Watch out with hard low gear deceleration.I know the pipes sound soooo good, but it ware's out the dogs in the lower gears.:rockon00:

I hear that brotha!!

I'd rather pay for a pair of HH brake pads than use the trans. to slow down too often. I seldom downshift hard for financial reasons.
Steve
You got that right Steve. Learned a good lesson with my last motor.I'm very easy on my new-er tranny.Very little downshifting.I Just use the breaks now:biglaugh: low gear deceleration is the Vmax "Achllies Heal"

I think that it's only the when the gears are being slid in and out that causes the worn dogs, so if I downshift hard, I blip it to save on gearboxes!

I downshift early in my car with a blip to save brakes, for financial reasons.
I was racing my girlfriend (as I'm sure we all do...), and she commented afterwards "You hardly use your brakes coming into corners."
I pointed out that her car was crap and being driven by an *****, but I was thinking "Just saving on clutches and brakes dear, just saving on brakes and clutches." :rofl_200:
